Drive-In Theaters

OK, if y'all think that the regular theaters suck then go to a drive-in and make sure you park near some of those kids with those huge car stereos. They blasted the soundtrack and I didn't even have to turn my stereo on! Not suck more for the surround sound but the sonic impact was way better than anything I've heard in theaters, even in IMAX or DTS equipped theaters.

Best part was, no one kicking my seat and nobody talking behind me through the whole movie!

BTW, paid $8 per person so it was $16 to watch "The Dark Knight" and then "Step Brothers". That was about 5 hours worth of movie watching. Grabbed concessions, got chicken fingers, a cheeseburger, two orders of fries, mozzarella sticks, 2 churros, a gigantic Dr. Pepper and a large Sprite for about $26. Not bad, the entire night cost $42. Pretty inexpensive for "dinner and a movie(s)".

Yeah, they got a $7 bring your own food charge which is reasonable because most of their money gets made in concession. They don't allow alcohol which is fine but you can pretty much bring what you want. If I go with the Lightning Owner's Club, we get a chunk of the back row reserved and everybody pulls in backwards, drops the tailgates, open the lawn chairs in the back, pop open the coolers, crank the stereos and open the windows. Well, except me, I open the clamshell bed cover to reveal my fully carpeted and padded bed and I pull out the arm chair pillows, a couple blankets and just sit back and r e l a x!

Last year they had music channels going during the time before the movie started. We'd get there like two hours early and just hang out. Take like 3 or 4 "jump boxes" along so when we drained batteries we could start truck back up. It's a good time!

But last night's company was that "good day" thing I was tellin' you about before it and yesterday's good day went in to today's "good day".

that's pretty cool.. the last drive in here closed about 15 yrs ago... I miss going to them... even though I didn't go that often. Why not revive them anyways? Here at least it would only be about 5 month's out of the year you could use the drive in... but what a unique movie watching experience that unfortunately today's young people will never get to experience for themselves.

    good post John.

I went to the movie house last night.. chips and cheese which they called nachos and a drink were $11.50

About 8 years ago some folks actually built a new one near where I live in British Columbia. It's near a really small town and has North America's biggest outdoor screen. I take my 12 year old boy there several times a year. We both love it. The IROC has huge sound, park where we want, bring our own food and beverage. Just two weeks ago we watched Kung Fu Panda and the new Indiana Jones flick. Awesome fun

Drive in's where the ****. I loved going. I remember just kicking the seat back and enjoying the double feature. The last ones that where opened , you used your am radio Instead of the window box. It worked well.

    I miss it.

Friggin' Drive-in's. WOW! The last movie I saw at a drive-in was 'Game of Death', w/ Bruce Lee. Prior to that, was 'Alien'. I'll never forget the movie before Alien.
It was 'Corvette Summer', w/ Mark Hamill! IMO, it's STILL the coolest car Hollywood ever made!:p

Where in NJ is there still a drive-in? I though the last one in Hazlet, NJ closed about 20 years ago.

Wow, it must be relatively new. I've lived in Jersey all of my life and didn't realize that we now have a "856" area code. I guess living north of I-195 for 40+ years will do that.

My wife and I decided our daughter needed to experience the drive in movie thing last year. So we all went with in the truck, and sat in the bed in lawn chairs, cranked up the sound, etc.

My spoiled snobbish daughter was less than thrilled by the whole experience.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

That would be it and that would be the one I have gone to on many occassions.

I'm waiting for something I want to see to be showing to make another trip back.

Also, since I've been going through my pile of stuff, I've found enough car stereo gear that I think I'm going to make myself a drive-in stereo. I have a car amp and a tri-way crossover with a pair of 6x9's and an old 8" sub. I'm gonna make it about 4 feet wide and use a deep cycle 12 volt marine battery to power it. That way I won't have to worry about if the truck will start when the movie is over! I can also sit in the bed and stretch out.
