Water found on Mars - confirmed by NASA

From here
LOS ANGELES - The Phoenix spacecraft has tasted Martian water for the first time. The robot heated up ice in one of its instruments earlier this week. Scientists say the chemical test confirms the presence of ice near the Martian north pole.

Until now, the evidence for ice has been circumstantial. That was based on photos Phoenix took of a hard splotchy area near its landing site and changes it saw in a trench.

Phoenix landed in the Martian arctic on May 25 on a three-month digging mission. NASA on Thursday said it was extending the mission another two months.

If they sprinkled some seamonkeys in there, they'd be Martians.

This is huge right here folks! Mars having its own water makes it a ton easier for us to go there. It also increases the chances we'll find some life on there as well.

We can't get along with with our own people on our own damn planet...so now we have to look for others to mess with!! I'd like to know the dollar figure for this "spectacular" find. How's about spending it to fix the mess we created here. Just a thought.

Can you imagine if they sent families? The kids in the back saying "Are we there yet?" "Are we there yet?" "Are we there yet?" "Are we there yet?" "Are we there yet?" "Are we there yet?" "Are we there yet?"

I think it takes a few months to get out there. Not horrible in the sense that you won't be 10 years older then when you left or something like that, but a few months in a spaceship might be a little rough lol.

Unless of course they are like the space ships in WallE...

NASA might even have a colony on Mars....by 2100.

If I'm not mistaken, if launched at the correct time of the year, a ship can get to Mars in about 6 months, with current technology. If they get the new propulsion system up and running they should be able to cut that time in half.

I think they said it's a 2.5 year trip, if the planets are aligned correctly. Then you have to stay long enough for the planets to re-align so you can get home.

I saw on PBS(NOVA) it was a 18 month round trip, due to planetary alignment issues, iirc.

Well it right in the middle.

If they have water and ice, then where are the boats and the fire to melt the ice. I'm not buying it.

And no pilgrims there with a thanksgiving feast prepared. Highly suspicious.

You're correct. Six months is the minimum one way travel time for now (dependent upon planetary alignment) , powered by a chemical rocket, but there are many people working on faster ways to travel.

My wife and I had a discussion a while back. I told her that if I were ever given the chance to do some serious space travel, she'd have to get over it, because I'd jump all over the opportunity.
