Ok, I know a lot of you have had or have a Jolida JD100 tubed CDP. I am currently running Sovtek12AX7LPS tubes. What I would like is to have 4 different [recommended] tube sets to play with. Price is not a concern but keep in mind I'm not looking for a rare set that costs thousands of dollars. All suggestions are welcome.

If you remember why [sound wise] you would recommend a particular tube set, throw me some of your knowledge. It's time to start some tube rolling. ;)

The best 12AX7s I've used, imo, were Telefunken smooth plates w/ diamond bottoms. The only thing is, they tend to be a little salty.

Jesse and I had a discussion about this yesterday. Both he and I keep going back to the EI Gold Pins. I have the same Sovtek's. I put them in every once and a while but always put the EI's back in.

I have a pair of Yugoslavian Ei 12AX7's, but the pins damn sure ain't gold. If memory serves, this is the one [Ei gold pin] that Jesse has recommended to others in the past.

EI elite gold pins! They are the bomb in the Jolida CDP! I have the Sovtek LPS tubes, and they are good, just not as big of soundstage as the EI elites. I have some CBS Hytron black plates, but I couldn't really tell a difference between them and the EI elites.

I would go with the vintage tubes. Telefunken smooth plates, Bugle Boys, RCA clear tops and Mullards. The 12 AX7 family is filled with different flavors of tubes to enjoy. I tend to stay away from the new tubes, that's just me.

I think I've tried just about everything, old and new including 5751's. The Ei's are still my choice.

what he said. I like the Telefunkens in mine and the IE's are good too.

You can find the Telefunkens on the Bay at times cheap. Also look for ECC83's.

I dont know how they will work in your cdp, but the Mullard re issues work very well for drivers in my Jolida 502 amp. Very balanced top to bottom and great mid range.

I agree about the Tele. It's the best X7 I've used.
If you want the complete opposite of Telefunken, try Mullard. They're warm, laid back and more full bodied.
For new production, the Ei is a Tele copy. They're made on Telefunken's machine.
JJ is also very good. Similar to Mullard.

The Gold pins are becoming harder to find since Ei is no more (purchased by Western Electric). The regular golds are just as good.

I did not like the Bugle Boys in mine at all. Way too laid back on the treble end. I liked the Svetlana and the Sovtek LPS.

Out of all the tubes I tried. The Solvtek LPS were the best IMO.

For 12AX7's, smooth plate Telefunkens sound pretty good in my rig. As far as new production goes the Sovtek LPS gets my recommendation. When compared to each other the Teles have considerably more detail and smoothness, but the Teles also cost about four or five times as much money. I've yet to try a Mullard, Phillips or EI, but plan to do sometime in the future. (I have tried Mullard 12AU7 variants and they've help produce some of the best results on my equipment so far.) I also experimented with JJ's and RCA gray plates (the ones with the getter material on top) and both ended up deeply buried in my tube stash. While the JJ's were acceptable the RCA's were unlistenable. Nothing but grain, thinness and lack of detail. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck in you search.

I forgot the RCA/GE/Raytheon Blackplates. I replaced the Teles with them and was very pleased. Never tried the gray plates.

that is frustrating about the gold pins. I would like to know if there is a big difference on the gold pins vs the Ei.

So so far, what is your fave tube in there that you have tried. I am on day 3 of the EI ( not gold pin) and it is a bit more mellow in the bass over the Sovtek but it is starting to kind of loosen up and fall into place. I do like the mids and highs on it but the Sovtek had more boom. The Ei though seem more controlled in he bass not lacking it but more laid back in a way. Still letting them sing for another week or 2 before changing back to see the difference.
