Saw it last night in a crowd comic book geeks... of which I am one?... Was very happy with the first two thirds of the film. The source material was faithfully represented. The final act was unfortunately too rushed. Most of the build up to the ending in the book was discarded, leaving me wanting more. For those who have read the book before, the actual ending has been changed and in my opinion an improvement on the original. Will be waiting for the directors cut to see what gets put back in. Easily recommended though.

what the hell is up with this movie? first off i'm not a comic book geek.. never heard of the comic book series Watchmen till the promos starting coming out.

i was dragged along by some friends who are big comic book geeks.

It was ok... if I understood the background better.. I prob would have enjoyed it more i guess. Either way. way to long, way to disjointed, way, way to much violence against women. and lots of gore if you like that. R rated

    Spoiler alert*
oh yeah.. the best part is the big well built blue guy who shows his **** most of the way through the movie. ;)

Very long movie. The director/editor probably had a difficult time trying to balance between filling the back story for newbies or cutting to the chase for the fans. I can't speak for the diehards but as a newbie I would have liked a bit more background story. Unfortunately, as is, the film is too long for my bladder to hold my large diet coke. The director's cut blu-ray should fix this problem (storyline that is; pause will fix the other problem).

Not action pack but more story and character driven. Pay attention to the dialogue but then this was not and is not meant to be Dostoyevsky. In the end, I did enjoy this movie. In a very loose way, this movie reminds me of reservoir dogs where you're thrown in the middle of the story line and given flashbacks to fill out each character but unlike R. dogs you do see the finale and aftermath.

    Rorschach rocks!

    Loved Laura Mennell.

I doubt any of of Billy Crudup actually made into Dr. Manhattan, he wore a motion capture suit with a bunch of blue leds during filming.drm.jpg If I had to guess pretty much every part of Dr. M was computer generated.

I loved it. What's not to love...sociopathethic costumed heroes, adult themes, large canvas, wonderfully drawn characters that are dark and enigmatic. Even at almost 3 hours, I left wanting more. I can't wait for the full story on BD. Redrawing the world into the Watchmen universe was a challenge on how much detail could be loaded into the film. Snyder did a great job of giving essentials and entertaining me (at least). I haven't read the graphic novel, but was totally enthralled by the movie. Can't wait to see it again, though I'll probably wait to see it (completely) at home.

I'm with you I loved it too. But I am a comic geek and have loved this story for years. I am very familar with the characters and it was easy to fill in some of the gaps. I always thought this was unfilmable but Zack did a great job.

Only problem I had with it was that there was no squid.

I could see not liking this if you walked in with no idea about the story.

Saw it Friday night. Don't know the story at all so when in totally blind. Also didn't know how long it was and they coulda/shoulda cut a bit out. Thought the first half was pretty good since it really had to set the stage as to what the hell was going on and who was who. Still not sure I get it yet.

Second half and particularly the final 1/3 trailed off. Got a bit too silly with the super hero thing and lost some of the raw darkness. Some of the scenes/violence were over the top (started laughing out loud at the jail scene with the cutoff saw). All in all I liked it but it had its weaknesses. Not a 4 star but glad I went.

Had a friend bring over his review copy of the Director's Cut DVD (though I wish he'd gotten the BD to review!). I really like the footage they put back into the movie. I can understand why some of the scenes were cut for the theatrical release as they were unnecessary to the overall plot. That said, I felt that those added scenes did a lot to fill out the general mood of the movie (especially the unfortunate fate of Hollis Mason), and the director's cut is definitely my preferred version.

As far as the DVD goes, video quality's about what you'd expect from a 186 minute long movie crammed on a DVD-9. It isn't awful, but this is a movie that will definitely benefit from a Blu-Ray release. The audio was every bit as thunderous as when I saw it in the theater. I don't know that you'll be using any particular scene as demo material, but this is definitely a disc you'll want to crank up loud.

Keep in mind... they're supposedly putting out a BD in December with all of the Black Freighter stuff reinserted. This director's cut just put back in all the live action stuff they filmed and does not include the Black Freighter footage. This cut is 3 hours 6 minutes, whereas the Black Freighter cut in December will top 3 hours and 25 minutes.

Having said that, I didn't particularly like the Black Freighter stuff when I watched it on its own, and I'd strongly recommend this cut of Watchmen.

I don't understand how people don't understand this movie. I've never read the comics and had absolutely no problem following the story, it's not THAT complex.

Other than the sex scene that was just thrown in there just to be there and added nothing to the movie, this was a great flick.

I normally would love this type of movie - super powers, violence, gratutitous sex.... whats not to love??

The story itself was just not that interesting, their powers were not that well explored or shown, and most of the nudity was of the male smurf variety (not bad, if your into that sort of thing, but to be honest - I'm just not).

All in all I would rate the movie about 3.5-4 on a scale of 1-10. (Weak, but watchable if you are into the genera - if not, don't bother)

I loved the comic book and hated this movie. Didn't understand why they had to keep showing his blue whip hangin out there. Poorly acted but good special effects. A solid 3 out of 10 in my book.

I just watched this on a rental of the theatrical cut and I must say this is a really good movie that I had low expectations for going in. I saw it knowing almost nothing about it and enjoyed it very much, but I wish I had seen the ultimate version that clocks in at about 3 hours and a half. [I'll probably buy the Ultimate version] From what I read after watching the movie is that it is fairly faithful to the book. One of the aspects of this flick that I really liked was the dark and adult nature of the film and the back story of some of the characters was also of interest.

    Two "Thumbs Up".

btw..it was a bit odd to see Mr. Manhattan's "swinging sirloin" in many scenes. lol I'm not sure if the scene in prison at Rorschach's cell was meant to be funny or not, but, it cracked me up regardless...my guess is that the humor was intended. "nothing personal" lol

I have the Director's Cut on Blu ray that I watched again the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it immensely for the second time. Even the 3 hr. length was fine. I bought this at BB for about $7.99 had never known anything about watchmen comics before and had zero problem following the movie. Not sure why so many couldn't follow it. Had no problem with the violence etc... Would be cool to see a prequel made.
