Why is Oprah so powerful?

& sweat.
That painted a pretty picture for me. All I can say is she is nobody compared to Michael Jackson.Vinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
Thank you T3 & Brett.
Oprah has made her way to the top with her own hard work & sweat. She has tons of money, power & influence & uses it to try and inform, educate, & help other people.
And I doubt any of you jealous bozo's will ever do anything as meaningful or accomplish a quarter of what she has done for herself or anyone else.
No one ever said she didn't earn what she has or doesn't deserve it, Cathy. She really doesn't do anything particularly wrong (aside from catapulting that hack Dr. Phil to fame, which should be a felony), it's more her fanbase who are so stupid as to hang on her every word like it's Gospel that get under most people's skin, certainly mine. Those screaming ninnies in her audience should be round up and sent to a loony bin. Or maybe Oprah should dedicate some of her shows to teaching people how to think for themselves. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

You'll notice that the posts I made, other than the endorsement one, were in a joking manner. Maybe I should use the emoticons more often, as not to offend anyone.
I don't care who it is, an entertainer should ENTERTAIN us, not tell us who to vote for, even if I agree with them. If she wants to become a political analyst, then she should do so.
I completely respect what she has accomplished over the years, but religion and politics should be steered clear of, by entertainers.
You'd think that entertainers would have learned by now, not to publically endorse a political candidate or religion. Although some of their fanbase may agree with them, they will still alienate a vast percentage.
I do stand by her being flamed for Dr. Phil, though.:p"SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

What about Arnold Schwartzenager (sp?) and good ol' Ronnie Reagan?~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

Cfrizz, from the way I'm interpreting these posts, I don't suspect jealousy, but, rather confusion. We just don't get WHAT the attraction is? A lot of people shake their heads at people like Warren Jeffs, Chuck Manson, Rev. Jim Jones. etc.
I'm NOT calling her a psychopath, but, she does have ALMOST a cult following.
I'm NOT trashing her, (except the OB endorsement), I just think she could do MORE with her power, than endorse books?
Now I'm trashing her: Giving gifts to your studio audience? Um, isn't that BUYING conditional love?I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -

Well, Oprah hasn't done nearly as much for African-Americans as Mike Johnson:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CVH58a7eUy4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CVH58a7eUy4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Mike Johnson is Country Music's No.1 Black Yodeler.
He's so good, I'll bet you can't even name the No. 2 Black Yodeler in the World.
He is also one of the 18 world famous yodelers featured on the 2006 "Rough Guide To Yodel" CD, compiled by Bart Plantenga and released by the World Music Network in London, England. (Plantenga authored the 2004 best seller "Yodel-Ayy-Eee-Ooo, The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World.")
You think Oprah's ever done anything like that ? No way !!
And let me ask you this: Ever seen Mike Johnson on Oprah's show ? No. You want to know why ? P-Envy, that's why !
(professional envy).
No, my problem with Oprah isn't with Oprah; it's her audience.
I rate them as the equivalent of fence-climbing dogs.Sal Palooza -

OBIEONE "Now I'm trashing her: Giving gifts to your studio audience? Um, isn't that BUYING conditional love."
Your just mad you wasn't there. LOL
Theirs no difference between her audience following her and some of you guys following POLK. -
Well if your problem isn't with Oprah, then maybe the question should be: Why do ALL studio audiences come across as "mindless sheep?"
I have yet to see any talk show that don't have screaming fanatics in the audience. Have you? That's why they have an audience! For the most part it's entertainment.
Noel, I agree with you about the politics & religion, but since this is America they are entitled to state thier opinions just like anyone else. You just don't like it because they have such a wider audience.
But it doesn't mean that everyone is going to listen & follow, any more than I listen to any of you when you all spout your overly rightwing republican BS!
Max, I don't think you will ever see Oprah crash & burn like MJ, she is way to mentally stable for that!
Sigh, BBL, you post some of the most useless, crap to be had on any forum. where you find this crap is a very frightening thought. You're being obtuse. Oprah goes far and beyond the standard audience, and you know it. Her ability to wield her fan base to her own whim and the power she has over the products they purchase is legendary and without peer. I'm not exaggerating here, the evidence backs this up....since this is America they are entitled to state thier opinions just like anyone else. You just don't like it because they have such a wider audience.
This is such a straw man argument that people love to throw out. No one says that Oprah isn't entitled to her opinion or to the right to state it. Trying to deprive someone of their right to do something, and criticizing them for abusing their right to do something are NOT even the same thing. People are criticized, quite often BY YOU in fact, for their opinions ALL THE TIME; no one says they don't have their right to state said opinions. But it doesn't mean that everyone is going to listen & follow
The difference here is that the demonstrably DO listen and follow. My criticism, and I like to think a lot of others' criticisms, of Oprah isn't that she has an opinion or fans, it's that her fans very blindly and passionately follow her. Every book she mentions is an instant bestseller. Every product she endorses is instantly successful. I don't for a second think anyone should step in and stop her, but I would love for someone to give her wide fanbase a wakeup slap in the face.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Off topic, Cfrizz did you ever play SWG?
On topic, Oprah sucks..blah blah wah cry..etc etc.... -

Its coming. I give her another year or two until you see the breakdown. The more stable they look the harder they crash. I'm surprised she lasted this long.

Actually, I need to get another job. And ..... just a second ....
Hey, you guys hold the noise down in there, I can't think !
....sorry, my sons are hosting this month's Yodel Club and the Club's getting a little out of hand (as usual) ....
...so.....I forgot what I was going to say .... Well, as long as we both completely agree then that Oprah's audience are composed of crazed, but sedated, homicidal housewives (with an occasional Metrosexual Male thrown in for good luck), then .....
....come to think of it, I do have too much free time on my hands ! :rolleyes:Sal Palooza -
Sorry Bob, but I really don't see why you have a problem with her suggesting people step away from the tv, pc & pick up a book & read it! Why should you get upset when they do? Is it impacting your life in any, way shape, or form? Obviously not. SO WHY DO YOU CARE???? And just what is your problem with a product being successful?
Reading books & buying a certain type of cosmetic, etc. is NOT going to bring the world to a screeching halt! How often do you switch products? How many of those people that you think she has such influence with do you think may have bought something recommended by her & decided they didn't like it.
What true harm do you think she is doing? What kind of harm are the people who do follow her suggestions are doing since she certainly hasn't taken away thier free will or put a gun to thier heads.
You and everyone elses beef with Oprah & others like her don't make a bit of sense. If it doesn't affect you, then what is there to get bent out of shape about? Just live & let live & the world will continue go round.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -

It's a fair enough question. As I've said, I don't have a problem with Oprah in particular, but again, her mindless drones. Maybe Oprah is pointing them towards good things, maybe not, the point is people shouldn't be so willing to blindly follow someone else, whoever it may be. Having someone in a very powerful and influential position makes me uncomfortable; Oprah is very philanthropic and seems to legitimately want to do good, so I don't have much a problem with her as I do with knowing there are literally millions of people who will watch someone on TV for one hour a day and do whatever that person tells them to, including listening to a bald idiot who passes himself off as a doctor and gives horrible advice.
So no, Oprah doesn't affect me. Knowing there are that many sheeple in society just bothers me. We're all bothered by some type of person; I"m mostly bothered by people who can't think for themselves. People who listen to the likes of Oprah epitomize that type of person. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Well which is it? Do try to make up your mind so that you can make a coherent statement!bobman1235 wrote: »It's a fair enough question. Ophra Windbag's followers are typically at home all day not working. I like stay at home moms, but when 80+% is uneducated 6 kid having welfare sucking trash(the white kind too;)), and bleeding heart liberals then these people would fall into the mindless sheep category.

Bob:
You should have known better than to try and argue with one of her minions...durrrr....
BTW, your point was very clear, just some people, umm, yeah....
Here it is in simple terms: Oprah is a focal point for the mindless drone masses of this country. She, herself isn't evil or wrong, but the power she wields over a good chunk of the populous is. One person's opinion isn't wrong and should be encouraged, but when that persons opinion becomes fact for millions of people in the country without a single tought of their own, that is wrong.
And I'm out as this would become too political to continue...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -

I'd hit it.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
