Why is Oprah so powerful?

Really. Why?
I keeping seeing her listed as one of the most, if not THE MOST, powerful person in the entertainment business year after year. I have only noticed her talk show, her "O" magazine, and some TV movies her production company produced. That's it.
So what's the deal with that?

It's all her talk show. A large, large number of women listen to WHATEVER she says. She mentions a book on her show and it's instantly a bestseller.
Buncha nutty hens if you ask me. You ever seen the audience of that show screaming like a bunch of whackos every time she speaks? Pathetic. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

Maybe Polk Audio can demo some speakers on her show?
How big is her daily audience? Can't possibly be bigger than, for example, Jerry Seinfeld's when he had a show. -
The moment Oprah endorsed Obama, Hillary didn't stand a chance. A sitcom doesn't tell people what to do, buy, read, watch or wear. At least, not directly.
From this MSNBC article :Oprah's audience is predominantly female, white, and over the age of 55. Nationally 7.4 million people watch Oprah daily -- about 2.6% of American households. Four percent of American women (about 5.7 million) watch her daily, compared with 1.2% of men (1.7 million people). Overall, 2% of all 18- to 49-year-olds watch Oprah. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Man, why y'all gotta be knockin' Oprah? She's rich, powerful, generous and a nice woman as far as I can tell. She's got a HUGE following as well. She hasn't done anything but good things for people everytime I have heard news about her or happened to watch her show.
She won me over as an actress in the movie........I think it was "The Color Purple" or something like that. I like her, though I have not watched a show in probably four or five years.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? Not knocking Oprah at all. In fact, I would like to be as powerful as she is....think of all the women who would listen to me. >>Evil laugh<< -

Unless I'm missing something, people CAN have views that differ from you and still be categorized as "a good person" instead of a "piece of **** from which you wouldn't take water if you were in the desert" type of person.......but that's just me..........comment comment comment comment. bitchy.

An Opra supporter, who woulda thought... To me she seems like a person who makes up her own mind and then ships it out on the air. Should everyone blindly follow her lead, probably not. Should they take her lead and try to figure out why she looks towards the direction she does? Yes.

The Obama endorsement cost her $millions and her audience. Her predominantly female audiance left in droves and subscriptions to her magazine were cancelled at a rate never seen before. Advertising rates for her show took a dive. Ellen DeGeneres (spelling?) is the benefactor as her show is now on top in the ratings and advertising rates. Her spin doctors have been pretty good at information control, but you'll see tidbits in the advertising and publishing industry trade rags. I also know some people that helped manage the magazine circ and database, and they've been in disaster control.
With all that said, give her the respect she should have for what she had built and done. Not many people can build up the kind of loyalty she had from her viewers, and she'll most likely find a way to get back on top.DKG999

Many years ago, I was in a waiting room and the Oprah show was on (I had heard about the show bet never saw it). On that particular segment the discussion was "which way do you place your roll of toilet paper...to roll on the outside or on the inside?" (I kid you not!).....I never watched a show after that.

The power doesn't come from ratings or numbers, it is the fact that she owns every piece of every thing she touches. She owns the production company, total rights to syndication, the studio building, the publishing co., the mag revenues, etc.
Few people in any type of business have the % of cut that "O" does. She's powerful because people allow her to be. If people ignored her show, her magazine, her books, etc. she would become irrelavent. I have nothing against the woman, I am not a fan of her TV show. Much of it is kind of boring for my taste. Day time TV in general is pretty lame. Soap operas, Judge Judy, I don't find any of it entertaining.Carl

Ooooh, get out the burn ointment.
I don't have a problem with Oprah. I do have a problem with the yodelling syncophants in her TV audience, though.
From my extremely skewed viewpoint, most of these suburban white women appear to be thrilled to death that they actually get to see .... now get ready for this, don't be shocked .... a real, live black person !!.
In the flesh !!
Yes, after the show, they can march back to their SUV's with real street cred'. They're now one with the 'hood. They're down with the brown.
They go home, all pumped up, and probably have the wildest conjugal relations they've ever had with their husbands that night, just like their sistahs in the hood ...... with .... THE LIGHTS ON !!:eek::eek:Sal Palooza -

she's powerful because however she did it, she's got an EXTREMELY loyal audience. the number almost doesnt matter, they do whatever Oprah says in complete lockstep with her wishes (be it books or presidential candidates).
anyone that has that influence over so many people is gonna have the money and power follow,

Oprah has made her way to the top with her own hard work & sweat. She has tons of money, power & influence & uses it to try and inform, educate, & help other people.
