I have to respectfully disagree a little bit. In my experience after the speakers the source has made the most difference, the amp and pre-amp are almost tied with the edge going to the preamp having made a difference, then cables.

    So to recap

    Speakers-especially proper placement
    Source
    Preamp
    Amp-very close tie with above
    Cables

That's my take on it after 20+ years in this hobby. Also remember SYNERGY has more to do with it than any singular piece of equipment.

    YMMV,

AGREE 100% with H9's list and the order in which it's given ^

Sometimes there are great values in audio--these Emotiva pieces may be such. For the low cost, why not try it?

I do believe the room and the surroundings have a significant effect on how a system performs, but sadly many of us have little choice or room to setup the perfect room. I will say that for those having issues with perfectly good gear and speakers one of my first questions is "How is it set-up and where is it set-up"?

My system is set up as optimally as possible for where it is; which is pretty damn good. Not perfect but I've eliminated many of the common problems by very careful placement of the speakers and my listening position.

I'd advise all the to do the same as much as possible based on what you have to work with as far as a listening space and them go forward from there.

"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!

Very few people, including myself, have the funds available to have a perfect audio room. I would love to hear any audio rig in a perfectly designed room. I imagine my wifes Bose Wave radio would even sound good in one. But as H9 said, most of us have to compromise whether it is with a wife or the shape and design of the room.

A lot of folks here have some very fine equipment and may have it in a not so ideal room. Positioning of everything in the room can have a very serious impact on the SQ. I have to admit it, I do not roll pieces in and out all the time. The reason is my room has limitations. Rolling can be fun and informative, yet is it better or just different? If I have huge nulls and peaks with piece A, I'm probably going to have it with piece B. The room will mask or accent any freq. How will we know we are getting the true presentation of any particular piece if the room has not been corrected to the best "possible" level?

It amazes me to see someone not think twice about dropping big dollars on a new sub to get better bass, yet the thought of spending the same cash on some nearly invisible and very wife friendly room treatments gets no thought.

I'm going to get off my soapbox. I did not want to jack this thread.
