????What kind of printer you got that needs tech. support?
Have you tried reloading the drivers? If you don't have the disk, just go to their website and download them.

    lol.

Well I have a HP photosmart C7180 printer. It is hooked up through my linksys router to my desktop and my laptop. Worked fine for about a year. A few months ago I had problems with it not scanning. When I click on scan to computer, its says "No scan options" "Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot"

So I reinstalled it on my desktop and laptop. It would print to off my laptop, but would not scan to it still, but it would work fine on my desktop. Having the exact same problem again.

Good luck with your printer, though!

Right click on the start bar (where the running programs are at the bottom)
    Click task manager
    Click the processes tab
    look for one called spoolsv.exe

The way he was talking about though -

Click on Start - control panel
Click switch to classic view on the left. (if is says switch to category view you are already there)
    Click administrative tools
    Click services
look for a service called "print spooler" (should also say started and automatic)

Thats all there is to it... :)

HP service sucks ****. I had 2 laptops both of which had to be repaired many times. Once warranty runs out , they want nothing to do with yeah. It's amazing. I don't think they have much repeat business. They will never have mine ever again.

I'm going back to HP printers FROM Epson. I have a RX500(I believe?) that will not print, copy, or scan if any ink cartridge is low.

Now how would a low ink cartridge affect how a printer scans, I don't know.

Plus the fact that it won't let you print in monotone(black only) if one of the color cartridges is out.

    That's just greed IMO.

My HP wouldn't let me print black and white if another cartridge is out. It will, however, print black and white if the black is out...?

Since you have it connected via the network and are having issues, have you tried directly connecting to the laptop via USB? Did you recently install or adjust any firewall settings on the laptop?

Best to check it anyways. That way you can clarify once and for all whether there's something physically wrong with the unit, or just the networking part of it.

I bought an HP D5160 Photosmart right after Christmas for $69.00. Best printer I've ever had. Great photos. Superb black and white printing and prints directly onto cd/dvd printable disks. Original cartridge printed over 100 disks. When it dies I'l toss it and try to find another. Customer support sucks but then there's Polk Forums.

I had a similar issue with an older Photosmart and an HP laptop. To fix, I would have to delete the printer from the laptop (Start>printers/faxes), then re-add it by browsing for a printer under (Start>Printers/faxes>Add printer). . .sometimes having to re-install the driver because I would get a prompt telling me that the driver on the desktop was wrong. The spooler service would quit for no reason as well. I have no idea why,. . the restore points and event logs showed/solved nothing. Bad combo. I tossed it when the cost of ink for it exceeded the cost of a new crappy printer.

Regardless of the intended purpose of a product-I troubleshoot by process of elimination. I try to verify what works and what doesn't-trim the problem down to the basics. Then I try to determine why the problem exists and how it happened. Of course the ultimate resolution is to get it working for the inteded purpose-but you have to take certain steps to get there.

If the printer works fine directly connected, then you will have verifiied that the drivers, applications and the printer are working as designed (or will have revealed a failure). Assuming you did this, and all works, then you could concentrate of the networking portion being an issue. If not then you can at least rule out networking being part of the problem. Its also possible that you have a multilayer problem.

Until you determine the cause of the problem, I would reserve judgement against the manufacturer. For all you know this whole issue could have been self induced or perhaps caused by a recent OS security patch (are you set to autoupdate??). Also if this problem is prevalent in this particular model, it might only be a particular model that's affected. I know in the distant past, that HP discovered a widespread issue with the feed rollers on thier deskjet printers. They covered the replacement of the parts and labor of those rollers long after warranties were expired-Sometimes 2 years after (and that was when they still had 3 year full warranties-oh the good ol' days).

I personally can't stand to deal with the helpdesk phone drones that usually work from a script anyway. So not having warranty phone support is no big deal to me. I always try to find the solution from the manufacturer website knowledge bases and then Google. By the way- software, setup and configuration issues aren't covered by warranty. So it really doesn't matter whether you issue happened during the warranty or after unless its determined to be an actual hardware failure. Some companies will require a Credit Card before providing phone support anyway-this way once the problem is determined they can either charge you or not for the call.

I had a problem with an HP printer that wouldn't print web stuff.
Drove me nuts. Turned out a font package my wife was installing
with a free "design a postcard" program was doing it. I'd blow everything
out, get it to work, and she'd go back and re-install it. That's why free support stops.
At some point, it gets expensive.
That's one reason my company's fix for many laptop problems is to
automaticlly re-image the drive back to a standard profile. Software
added to a pc screws it up. Sooner or later, two apps don't like
    each other.
Good luck. Type out your problem, and do a search. It's amazing how
often 10 minutes of online reading solves a problem, as opposed to
45 minutes on hold waiting for a technical rep.
