    have you tried it

Actually yes, not in my own system but in my brother's HT system. We found better results with the GIK acoustics I wasn't using. He and I agreed that the dynamics killed some of the dynamics and realism that was once present. It may have fixed some resonance issues but the sacrifice was not worth it.

I think there's a fallacy in the audio world about dialing in the bass and leaving it there for every song and for every type of music. If bass serves as the foundation for music, it should be readily adjustable just like the volume on a remote. A remote controlled bass management system -- oh yeah!!

    damn straight.

Of course I'm thinking mainly of low subsonics fundamental (16 Hz pipe organ for example) that seem like they could crack my foundation. But 20-60 Hz can really pound too.

    Early,

No. Bass is part of the audio equation. You can't omit it. You can't ignore it. It is part of the musical reproduction, part of the impact and experience of the reproduction. Yes. The more accurate the bass, mid-bass become the less "impact" [if you will] you may experience. This is good IMO. Some still prefer...........

the bigest problem i have with my bass is everything in the room shakes when you have a huge bass scene. i have fixed most of the rattles with cauck, drywall screws but the wall the sub is bult in to will move 1/6 of a in when it is realey low fr bass. heck sweeping 26leters of air is sweet

    Turn the sub's volume down.;)

At first, it's sorta neat to have everything in the whole damn house shaking, but after a while it's annoying, especially if the rattling of stuff in the room is audible. It's the car audio syndrome -- if there's too much rattling, chances are that the bass is distorted.

The speakers are Gallo Ref 3.1s, they are pretty strong down to about 22hz with usable output below 20hz.

Any eq should be able to give you ruler flat response, but there is more to it than that. IMO the improvements in the soundstage and imaging I got from a treated room outweigh the improvement brought by flatter bass. EQs just can't fix the issues caused by long decay times. I agree that EQ + treatments would be the best, as treatments are relatively ineffective below ~50hz or so in most cases.

in my case when i had the sms-1, i could never get it flat - was so awful that it looks like humps on a camel!

the sms-1 allowed me to find the flattest response by moving the mic around. i move the couch to the flatTER response position and then calibrated the system with audyssey, letting it flatten out some minor peaks.

the next thing for me is acoustic treatment...but my room is non-ideal, too many openings - i dont even know where to start :(

I feel violated...:D. Honestly though, stuff starts shakin' in my room when I start getting into the sub 25 Hz range by running test tones. Below 20 Hz, it's all shaking or vibrating.

The openings may be helping your otherwise square room.

Besides some nice heavy drapes over your windows, corner bass traps, traps at the first reflection, it's hard to make suggestions without seeing the rest of the room.

Sounds to me like you are yearning for a different style rig in a different room possibly for those recordings you want to get a different feel from. I do this with my 45/78 RPM rig. Sometimes you are looking for a different sound. As far as I can tell you just need different systems.
