Tennis is the same way, extremely mental and you have to make better and better shots than your opponent in order to win and those shot making abilities (in all situations) does get into your opponents head.

Tennis is absolutely a sport, having both offense & defense. I have a say in how well you'll perform by controling how I hit the ball back & handle your returns.

There's a fatal flaw in your argument, a couple actually:
One, I think most people would agree that Olympic track and fields events, for example, are sport. If you won't grant me that then there's no need to read further. Your definition of sport would then be so limited that only a few things would be considered 'sports' and the definition of 'sport' really becomes meaningless and whether something is considered a sport or not is insignificant, and no further discussion is necessary.
However, if you're willina to accept the Olympic games as sport, then continue. There's no defense in hurdles, high jump, or any of those other events that I can think of. I could research and find all the Olympic events with no active defense, but I think you get my point. So, by your own definition these wouldn't be considered as sports - doesn't that strike you as odd?
Two, the argument that there is no defense in golf is just ludicrous. Tiger may not be trying to tackle you while you putt, but just him standing there looking at you is quite a defense, and has been effective against almost everyone against whom he's played. The fact that my mere presence can affect how well you perform is a pretty damn good defense in my opinion. -

If this is the question you are referring to...it was a rhetorical question...which by definition does not elicit a response. I didn't care then and don't now.

Ummmmm.....I think you misread my post (or perhaps meant to quote someone else's post). I'm FOR golf being a sport as well as other individual types of games. I'm not arguing against it so your first sentence shouldn't apply. I agree with you. It's basically Pearsall001 that doesn't see the value of some individual games like golf as a sport.
I also never stated anywhere there is no defense in golf. A good offense is the best defense, IMO."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. I'd really like to see you make a serious argument that those in the Olympics are not athletes. Pffffffffffffffffffffft.
You are splitting hairs, here. I think that the premise that you are driving at is that there is no competition in golf which doesn't hold water. I'd actually say it's the most competitive in terms of relying on individual skill. No pressure? A couple of weeks ago, I needed to make about a 7 footer to win twenty bucks......I'd really hate to think about having to make that putt in front of millions of people for a million or so dollars.
Anyway, it's a stupid premise, stupid argument.

There's a difference between opinion and fact and you've got the 2 horribly confused.
Opinions are like ****; everyone's got em, some just stink worse than others. I can smell yours from here man.....
Go back to being king of whatever it is your are king of. I won't go into a nascar thread and piss on the "sport", don't see why you would in regards to golf.2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

Actually you haven't presented a compelling argument, and the one piss poor attempt you threw up I believe I refuted with two points, neither of which you've addressed.
I'm sorry, but this is thread-trolling at it's best. There's a thread about golf, which you enter only to say that golf isn't a sport and stir **** up, and then ask why people get so worked up?
Really? Are you honestly that clueless? If you can't see this then I suppose there's nothing I can do to help...
Now if you'd like to have an intelligent discussion in which we each bring up good points and address those of the other, then I'm all for it. I've already started, so feel free to address my points, it's your turn now.
I can actually think of one conceivable argument for a definition of the word 'sport' where golf may not be included, and that appears to pass all the logical tests I can think of at the moment, but I'm not gonna give it to you, you'll have to come up with your own.
I realize I'm being an ****, but you can't come into a thread that's CLEARLY marked and crap all over the topic and expect people not to get a little pissed off. -
Let's back up a little here. First off, I simply stated that in my opinion golf is not a sport. Simple enough to understand because an opinion is only a personal belief or judgement & is by no means a fact.
I never challenged the dictionary in it's wording as to what a sport is. According to the definition golf most certainly falls under the sport category. I have absolutely no problem with that as it is written.
However, I can form my own opinion on the subject which does not detract from the original fact that golf is classified as a sport.
And my opinion is that golf is not a sport but simply a game. We can argue till the cows come home on this one but the end result will be the same.
According to the dictionary: golf is a sport.
According to my opinion: golf is not a sport.
An opinion can never be considered a fact. Seems fairly simple to me.

In order for this to work you would need to give us your reasons why you think golf is not a sport(according to the dictionary).
Or you need to give your own refined definition of the word sport so we would all understand what you are saying. You might even consider your own word since sport is already taken and well known.Setup:
