Mixing 4 ohm and 8 ohm Speakers?

Hi all,

Help needed again .

I am looking at purchasing an Emotiva XPA-5 and shipping it here to Sydney, Australia. No issues with this as I have been in contact with Emotiva, but in the short term, I will be running a 4 ohm and an 8 ohm load consecutively, until I complete my LSi system.

My mains are currently LSi9s (the 2 x 4 ohm speakers), my centre an older CS350LS and my surrounds the LSfx from the same series of speakers (the 3 x 8 ohm speakers).

1. Will the different impedances place any additional stress on the amp (any amp for that matter, not just the Emotiva) or will it be all OK?

2. Will this also change the overall output of the amp as it is seeing a different load for different speakers? As an example, the XPA-5 is rated at 200w x 5 into 8 ohm, 350w x 5 into 4 ohm etc.

3. Will it feed the 4 ohm speakers a maximum of 350 watts and the 8 ohm speakers a maximum of 200 watts, or come up with say 250w x 5 as a happy medium - strange question I know, but just need some clarity around this.

Thanks in advance as usual.

Yep. No problem at all for any multi-channel amp rated to run 4 ohm speakers.

I have an Emotiva LPA-1 and I'm running 8 ohm (fronts), 4 ohm (center), and 6 ohms (rear). Calibrate accordingly.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Thanks Ben, Early and RT1 - just wanted to play it safe.

I know F1Nut doesn't think the Emotiva are good amps (not a real man's amp in a recent post of his), but it appears to me that the overwhelming opinion is that these are a great bang for buck alternative to mainstream brands, that sometimes even outperform the "brand" names.

Anyway, onto Emotiva today to place the order for the XPA-5. Thanks again guys for your input.

When I mixed 4 and 8 ohm speakers, my flux capacitor didn't hold, is that bad?
