anyone own/tested the pioneer elite 94tsx? a friend will sell me one for about $1,000. (new) also, is it possible to use 2 of its channels to bi-amp my front speakers and use the rest for 5.1 surround? thanks in advance

Excellent receiver and yes to the bi-amp. You just use the surround back terminal and make a setting change in the interface. The manual explains it. HDMI switching on that unit too.

Thats a crazy good price on a excellent receiver. It's loaded with very useful features and at it's retail price, I feel it's the best in it's class.

It's also a musical receiver which I like about it. It also decodes all the newest formats and has 4 hdmi inputs. That rocks.

Multiroom abilities are sweet. Ipod control and it comes with the Ipod cable. You can also get a Pioneer Ipod dock if you want your Ipod to sit up.

I think this is the perfect receiver for everyone who has 8 ohm polk speakers. It makes the Rtia series sing. I just demo'd our Rtia7's on the 94 and I thought that anyone on a budget that wants theater and 2 channel out of a system, this is the way to go. I was blown away on the combo.

I really can't say enough about the 94. I could go on and on.

Can anyone comment on the 94 Elite's upscaling performance? A friend who has an Onkyo 875, which is about the same price, says that the upscaling of basic cable etc. is great. Wondering how the Pioneer 94 compares to the Onk 875

It works great. I never did a side by side with the Onkyo but I feel the Pioneer sounds better. Onkyo is a acquired taste.

I preferred the 94 over my Denon 3808ci. I would be willing to bet that the upscaling MIGHT tip in favor of the Onkyo, but not to a severely noticeable level. $1000 is a good price. I think that's just over cost. The only better deal would be if you got a job at Best Buy and bought it w/ the employee discount. I got mine w/ the discount for $934 or something.

Seems the Pioneer has a higher THD than the Onk (0.09 versus 0.05). I suppose that is not something the average person would be able to detect.

I like what I've read about the Onk, but have concerns about the heat. Guess I could buy a small fan as others have done.

I use a Mpeg2 / DVB satellite receiver which looks at FTA signals off Ku band satellites. Some signals are close to DirecTV's HD close to amazing but only really 480i S-Video. I switch this via Harmony remote to a Pioneer tax receiver... Well that's the background. I prefer the video on my TV to work the S-Video directly vs. the 84tsx upconverting to HDMI, I'm not saying it doesn't work but....


Now stating this the 94tsx is a fine AVR and 1k is a great price, it would be hard to top that.

In audio specs in a receiver are severely overrated and mean next to nothing in my opinion. I once thought differently and pretty much shopped by spec's. But at some point, once you start getting some quality gear, you realize how little that stuff means.

Can someone confirm that the 94 upconverts from hdmi input to hdmi output? I would like to know if the signal from the cable box will upconvert.

I am also looking at the Pio 94 or 92. But i just checked out the new onkyo sr606 it can be had new for around $450 and has 4 hdmi in and can decode the new formats as well. what does the pio bring to the table that the onkyo doesnt?

dipiazza, the Elite 92 and 94 are both on my short list as well , though I don't know when I'll pull the trigger. I'm sure others here could point to many differences between the two. For me, the power difference (130 vs 90 watts), the pre-outs for a future amp, and the video-scaling, are the main reasons I would consider spending more money. I have the Onk 605 and wish I had the inability to add an amp since I purchased Rti10s for the fronts. With a little more power (like the Onk 805) I might not be in a rush to add an amp. Of course, the Onk 605/606 is probably all the average user with a modest size room will ever need, but hanging out in forums like this can be dangerous to your wallet.
