Hello all;
I was watching ALIEN resurrection earlier on today quite loud ,and I kind of broke my subwoofer. As you can see from the pics I sent the coil so far it went out the magnetic gap and hit the magnet. Its kind of stuck. The driver is 550wrms and 1100w peak I was delivering 1000wrms. I know I should have seen it coming. Oh well looks like a chance to build a new sub .:)

    Bummer - then again this is one of the few hobbies there are where, when something breaks, it is an opportunity to upgrade.

    Good luck with your new sub. Looks like you need to invest in a 15" or 18" this time.. :D

    How do you know you were delivering 1000wrms? Is there a meter somewhere?

    it is, i use my pa amp and graphic eq for my sub, the eq allows for more gain and a real thumpy bass, i should really have cut 25hz (i usually doo)as this is "subsonic" and would most likely prevent over excursion. i dont use the comp at home.

    no your right i don’t actually know but;
    my power amp is rated at 500wrms per channel at 4ohm which is what impedance my 4ohm per coil (2 coils) sub is/was.
    The amp is also likely to have hit "clip" so it will have been over 1000w. The sub is 1100w peak so to over excurd (sp?) it I would have to be driven over 1100w?
    I know that sub bass/ bass below 40hz can oven leads to over excursion in woofers (in the pro world) but this woofer stated nothing about cutting sub bass, and it is meant to handle bass (I think) .

    Did you pull the spider up like that or was that as found ? The bottom edge of the spider looks too clean....like the glue all pulled off in one clean motion.

    Sure you exceeded xmax....hell you even exceeded xmech....but that is the cleanest spider I have ever seen in that respect...most of the time the glue is stronger then the spider material itself and a lot of the spider is left shredded on the edge.

    At least you killed it with style :D

    That's impressive, Trooper !

    I don't know how your "4 ohms per coil/2 coil" sub is wired: are those coils in Parallel or Series ?

    In Parallel, you're talking 2 ohms and you might be giving your amp a hernia.

    Sorry for your sub loss, but thanks for posting those pics.

    i am only guessing, but with the power amp mentioned, he is probably running---- well, WAS running--- the sub in "stereo" (even if it is summed to mono somewhere). most amps like that can do 2 ohms per channel all night. bridged is a different story, however. for example, my mackie FR-M800 is rated at 275wpc 4 ohms and 400wpc 2 ohms. but bridged, the rating is 800w into 4 ohms, and 2 ohms is not recommended. i never bridge it, but often run 2 ohm loads for hours at a time.

    I just finished one of my TC Sounds subwoofers this week , and I am using one of my bridged Rockford Fosgate RF2000 amps with it. Bridged into 8 ohms its 600 watts per channel...bridged into 4 ohms its 1,200 watts per channel .....the sub is a 4 ohm load ( 4 ohms is the lowest recommended ohm load to run bridged...thats basically a 2 ohm per channel load on the amp while bridged )

    I am using every bit of its BL linear one way 30mm xmax ....staying away from the one way xmech of 46mm :D
