Gasoline price - where would it end up at this summer?

$3.85 unleaded 87 octane

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_home_page.html

At what point before we all agree that it is a problem, domestically?

I can see that it will hit $4/gallon average, before August. West Coaster will be paying more than that by then.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Just passed by a gas station today, and it was $3.79 for regular unleaded (87 octane).

I think it might go past $4 a gallon this summer but I'm not sure.

    There already is a problem.

Between overinflated gas prices and adjustable rate mortgages catching up with people, we're in for trouble.

I have a feeling we haven't seen the worst yet.

Long Island gas prices are even worse. Here in Queens it's already a problem and prices are going up by the minute...

Most of you folks don't remember the last gasoline crisis in 1979. People were waiting line long lines at gas stations. Some gas stations were closed. Talk of rationing gasoline, etc. In Pennsylvania they had an "even and odd" system. You could buy gas according to the last digit in you license plate. Even numbers bought gasoline on even days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday), odd numbers on odd days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) and everyone could buy gas on Sunday but many stations were closed. People will buy gasoline as long as it's available, no matter what it cost. To a reasonable point of course. We're a long way from that point. When people can't afford to drive to work, then we got problems.

    Oh man it's horrible!

I just changed the oil in my car in October and I checked, in five months I've already put 2,300 miles on my car!

The thing is I only get 30MPG so I've filled up SIX TIMES already in only five months!

You could move to Carcas venezuela, its only 12 cents for a gallon there. But as much as it sucks I think americans need something like this to help them move away from the heavy gas guzzlers they are used to driving because too few people in this country actually care about the environment. I used to work Valet at a golf course & too many times I would see people drive up in a Excursion with nothing in it but the person driving it & one golf bag which is insane.

    Amen.

I've cut down my driving, keep lists of what I need so I can combine my trips, stop driving needlessly, check tire pressure regularly, drive my older car that gets slightly better gas mileage, etc.

Not because I can't afford gas. Because we should all be contributing to lower the amount of oil we need to import and refine.

If everyone would do this it would go a long way.

Dang, what the heck do you have to complain about?? I don't do 'that much' driving, in my opinion, but I'd drive 2300 miles in about two months.

And I usually average 16.5mpg. Fill ups, which are just about weekly, cost anywhere from $55 - $65.

To be fair, and I don't want to have this start anything, but to be FAIR, we have been on the low end of the global scale for YEARS. I don't like Europe comparisons, but over there they've been paying several dollars a LITRE (where there's 4+ litres in a gallon) for a while now. SO you could say we're kind of catching up with where things are around the world.

My Jeep runs diesel it's close to $4 per gallon already. On a trip to Denver there were a couple spots that were approaching $4.25 a gallon. While I know most of you don't drive diesels, the cost of transporting goods depends mainly on the trucking industry. Part of the reason everything is going up in the stores too.

The increase in prices have made a huge difference on what I spend on gas a month. (I average just under 3k miles/month)

The odd thing was that gas and diesel were both cheaper in the Denver area than the Metroplex here. That has never happened in 12 years of driving there from Dallas.

Makes me wonder what is really going on?

This will be the only political based post you will likely see from me. I somewhat agree for the housing/mortgage collapse, although that's a pretty broad statement. Many people are in trouble not of their own doings. Ever seen a very good mortgage broker work on a customer; they are very very convincing; not a 100% excuse but damn they can really convince one that the house is affordable. I agree many homeowners *should* take responsibility for their actions.

As far as the gas thing goes; it's not a supply issue at this point. It is and always has been a finite commodity but even if we had all driven hybrids gas would still be outrageously high because most of it is due to inflation and decline of the dollar. Granted had we all been driving hybrids the effect on our budgets would be slightly less but prices would be the same.

Right now food and gas are outrageously priced compared to what we have been used to.
