I'm looking for some good music with lots of bass and drums. It can be a great American drummer or something exotic or with an international flair. The music needs to have lots of variety; otherwise, I'll get bored with it.

Whatcha got?
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

    Gene Krupa vs Buddy Rich.

Actually a jazz album but there's one big drum battle in it.... though from the review on that page I'm not sure if this is what I'm thinking of...
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Try some Airto Moreira; You'll definitely like it (well.....maybe....if you're as hard to please with music as with movies...)

    Check out the band Albannach

    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=albannach&search=Search

They are a Scottish drum and bagpipe group but quite good. They play alot of Celtic battle and folk music. Kinda like the stuff from Braveheart. Saw them in person at the PA Renaissance Faire and they were absolutly awesome and very down-to-Earth people.

The albums give the Amazings quite a workout. Better have some good low-end extension in your stereo 'cause that gigantic bass drum will tax your system. Especially when the dude with the long brown hair starts going apeshit on it!

My favorite is Phil Collins "First Final Farewell Tour". It is a well recorded live concert in DTS.
There is a drum battle in the opening set that is AWSOME!

If you're into jazz, Art Blakey's stuff is quite nice. A Night In Tunisia is a classic.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

    Drum for drum's sake?

You might like The Blue Man Group's Audio CD. It's... dynamic.

You might also like Mickey Hart's Planet Drum. Then again, you might not.

    Good,well recorded drums in music?
Jennifer Warnes' song Way Down Deep is astonishing
Best recorded drums I know of, Charlie Byrd's eponymous 45-rpm, 12" direct to disk (record) on Crystal Clear Records. Not hard to find if you still spin the big disks.
A piece called Hands with a Hammer featuring Terry Bozzio (did I spell that right?) on one of Frank Zappa's You can't do that Onstage anthologies. Originally recorded in quad by FZ and quite remarkable.

Great R&R drums? The Who's album Quadrophenia. You won't hear Moonie being "the best Keith Moon-style drummer I know of" any better than on this album. His featured track, Bellboy is a standout.

    Another for Rich vs Roach

Grateful Dead- Parallelogram off of Infrared Roses. The rest of the album's interesting to Deadheads only, IMO, but this track is an immense battle between Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman (sp?). A great workout, especially for stereo subs; I think they used just about everything in their kits.

If you want bass and drums get The Blue Man Group (Audio) or Beastie Boys (Paul's Boutique or The Mix Up).

Latin: Arturo Sandoval (Danzon, Tumbaito, & the Latin Train, Rumba Palace) and Santana have some amazing drummers.

Jazz: Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Max Roach and plenty of others are always good choices.
I own both of these compilations/tributes for a nice variety of quality drumming styles:

I'll +1 Rush (might not be everyone's taste in music but Neil Peart is incredible - try All The World's A Stage) and Greatful Dead (dual drummers is cool...and difficult to pull off - maybe Terrapin Station).

    Lose Rich VS Krupa.
    Add Rich VS Roach.

+100. Rich vs. Roach is phenomenal. The rest of the music is in Big Band style but the drumming is out of this world throughout.

I'll add- The Who Live at Leeds. The drumming is typical Keith Moon, it's live and the drums are dynamic even though the recording sounds a bit dated. This is a stripped down recording and is much more enjoyable than over processed, over dubbed, over tweaked stuff that bands put out today.

Just thought I'd toss these recommendations in as well:
Japanese taiko drums - any CD by the Japanese group "KODO"
Talk about phenomenal drumming! Saw this troupe last year live - OMG!

Or, listen to Bill Ward's possessed maniacal pounding on Black Sabbath's "Looking for Today"

    Or Neil Pert from Rush

And here's an obsure tidbit that I'll be surprised anyone else has heard of - the Canadian group Wireless - love the tight tight drumming on the album "Positively Human, Relatively Sane"

    Happy hunting!

But I was suprised that no one had mentioned Taiko drums by the time I got to the thread. That's a great CD BTW

With the addition of the stereo subs, I "discovered" bass for 2-channel music, so I'm really into the drum thing right now. I wanna use this CD to show off my system.
