THIS KARMA IS COMPLETED.

Winners:
FACE (Polk MOMO)
ELOPLAYSPOLO
ZINGO (Blue Corporate)
CUBDOG

I managed to pry some stuff from Polk to give away on the forum. I only have Polo shirts right now but should have some other stuff available later this week courtesy of Al and Sheila :)

XL - Polk MOMO(Red/Black)
XXL - Eosone(Taupe - Vintage!)
XL - Polk Audio(Blue - Corporate Issue)

The karma requirement is a question and you MUST answer and say AYE! to be entered. I was inspired by another thread of similar makeup.

"What recording would you consider essential to your collection?"

Please select ONE(1)....it isn't THAT hard to do so. I mean entire album, not just a song. If you want to go a step further, purchase a copy of that recording, within $ reason of course, and give it away at the 2008 Polkfest. That would set you apart from the normal folks ;)

It doesn't matter what format the selection is on, as the gang can trade warez if they want after the fact.

I'm selecting Maceo Parker - Life from the Planet Groove(CD). It's a live recording out of Germany and it never fails to make me happy. The recording quality is very tight, well done and has a super live feeling. AYE!

Please use www.allmusic.com and link your offer if at all possible. That way we can read about your selection.

Karma means free and I'll draw the names on Sunday, April 6, 2008. There will be multiple winners so post losers! I'll tally the names of the ppl that are contributing and if you want to mail them prior to the event, feel free to do so. You will be held accountable and your Polk priviledges revoked for non-compliance ;)

The actual karma items will be mailed to the winners....the recording was just an afterthought idea, and specific to Polkfest 2008.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Don't let that deter you from "entering" the karma. I'm just listing what is in front of me.

Mine is a little obscure, but it seems that forever I have been going to see Martin Zellar live, either solo, with his bands the Geardaddies and the Hardaways, as the only official Neil Diamond tribute band, etc. He's just a fun performer that draws the crowd in and at the festival in Rochester MN can make 10,000 fans all his friends. The recording of his I wouldn't be without is Billy's Live Bait.

I wish Polk still the shirts to the public. I wear the white Polo shirt I got in a similar karma, also from Mark, to work sometimes. I work in a professional environment, so I can wear the T-Shirts with all the big logos and all that, but the one I have just has a small PolkAudio logo right where you'd normally see a Polo logo, and it's perfect for Friday casual attire.

I work in a building with a bunch of people who make decent money, and have people ask me from time to time who Polk Audio is. Believe it or not, I've actually brough three more people over to the dark side as a result.

Not in, as both are too large for me

Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You

This track from the 3rd album is a blues rock classic. The mood and tone set by this song is amazing. The solo, while hard for Jimmy to record, has very few overdubs is among his best studio solo's.

The song was recorded live in the studio with very little overdubbing. John Paul Jones played Hammond Organ on the song, using the bass pedals for the bassline. It was the only track from the third album that the band had played live prior to the recording sessions, but was reportedly the hardest to record.[1] One story mentions Jimmy Page taking a break following a series of failed attempts to track the solo. Seemingly unable to get the tone he was craving, he set about a walk around the studio to clear his mind. Sitting outside of the recording area was an unplugged amplifier, which he promptly appropriated, and recorded the solo we hear today on the next take. Audio engineer Terry Manning called it "The best rock guitar solo of all time."

This is one of a few songs in which one can hear the squeak of John Bonham's bass drum pedal in the studio, the others being "The Ocean" and "The Rain Song" from 1973's Houses of the Holy, "Ten Years Gone" from 1975's Physical Graffiti, and "Bonzo's Montreux" from 1982's Coda. In an interview he gave to Guitar World magazine in 1993, Page made comment of this whilst discussing the remastering of Led Zeppelin tracks:
“ The only real problem I can remember encountering was when we were putting the first boxed set together. There was an awfully squeaky bass drum pedal on "Since I've Been Loving You". It sounds louder and louder every time I hear it! [laughs]. That was something that was obviously sadly overlooked at the time.[2] ”

As an improvisational showcase for all four group members, and especially for Jimmy Page's electric blues guitar solos, "Since I've Been Loving You" became a staple and fan favorite of Led Zeppelin's live concert performances from 1970 until the end of their ninth American tour in summer 1973 (it was performed less frequently thereafter). It was played on the 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1977, 1979 and 1980 tours, as well as a few times on the 1975 North American tour. Just before this 1975 tour, Page broke the tip of his left ring finger in a door-slamming incident. They went on with the tour but they had to drop this song and "Dazed And Confused" from the set lists as he couldn't play them properly until his finger healed. In live performances of the song from 1977 onwards, Page would sometimes incorporate some of the solo of "Tea for One", a track from the band's 1976 album Presence.

Live versions are varied and extremely impressive and enjoyable.

Well if you could swing something in XXXL that would be cool....so call me IN

Thats easy...I could throw away my entire collection if I HAD to and keep just my AC/DC oldies with Bon Scott as frontman. There wasn't a party I threw or attended that didnt have that as background ( LOUD ) music...so its not just awesome music...its what the music brings back as well.

But I know we have to narrow it down to one recording...damn thats hard but I would say for me that would be.....Powerage.

AYE! I need some Polk Audio goodies.

Thank SolidSqual for bring this one to mind-

Well, it's nothing exotic, but I would consider Counting Crows - August and Everything After essential to my collection. That's different from favorite- but if I knew I was going somewhere where I wouldn't have access to music and I got to go through my CD collection and grab a handful of discs, this would be one that I would grab. In that context I think I'd consider it one of several "essential to my collection" recordings.

I see-some how I missed that concept :o. I'll leave the first entry just because it does have a cool history of the song but this is my OFFICIAL entry.

    AYE!

Being a huge Zeppelin fan we all know the history and impact of the regular studio albums on music in general. I have hundreds of bootleg recordings and I have always felt as special as the studio releases are the bands live performances are where its at. They are unparalleled in their live performances both in improvisation and intensity. Even the recent Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at the 02 Arena this last December demonstrated the power and force this live unit could knock you over with. Into their 60's they have more power and playing ability than many of their peers including the Rolling Stones and recent Cream reunion. I know because I've seen the entire concert.

The live music only heightens the Led Zeppelin experience and while I have had both of the concerts (in their entirety) which make up this official release for many years the editing and mastering of this very old set of tapes is amazing. The performance is beyond hot, and without todays technology the sound quality it achieves would not have been possible; even 3-5 years ago.

Finally an official release of some superb live material.

P.s. As an additional bonus I will donate (5) copies of the recent Led Zep 02 reunion concert on DVD as giveaways at PF '08. Shot by a well known videographer using an HD camera and wide screen setting w/excellent PCM sound. It consists of 2-DVD-R's, Artwork and includes the entire show. ROCK ON!

P.s.s The above only makes sense if it isn't officially released by the time PF '08 comes around.

    Aye Cap-i-ton!
One recording I would never give up, and that I demo on every set of speakers I can get my hands on is Bach's Toccata and Fugue in Dm (Any version as long is it is done on the organ). A good organ track really shows you how "live" your speakers do or do not sound. I love the imaging of the pipes on my SDAs.

And I also am in the XL category.

BTW, he sold "Zamboni" for enough to retire on about 6 mos ago. That and a couple of additional songs he sold to Neil Diamond, and he's pretty much retired except for an occasional local show, mostly at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA.

Payton - the last time I saw his show at the Surf he did a set of Buddy Holly songs. There were several very old people (and I mean old as in surprised they were there!) setting in the back by the bar. One of the ladies started crying as she was there for the last show and she said that Martin was the closest to sounding like Buddy Holly that she had ever heard.

    Keep 'em coming Polkies.

If you're not entering for some lame reason, you should get out more, as this isn't about anyone but Polk Audio and Club Polk membership. You can still hate me and enter. If you win something, simply give it to someone else. Easy.

The more people involved, newbies included, the more Karma goodies are given away. Otherwise, I'll just hoard them for another rainy day, or keep them for myself.
