PS3 as bluray player

Being able to blu-ray is a huge plus for the PS3, but is playing a movie and having your PS3 on that long bad for your PS3? I know there are some hardcore video gamers who have the system on for hours and hours, how are they able to do this, modded fan? I was playing unreal tournament it my PS3 started to get warm at the bottom after about 45 minutes.

I use my ps3 for everything it does. I have no problems with mine. yes it gets warm but I have proper space around my ps3 so air can get around it.
This is what it's made to do, forget about hardcore and all that nonsense.Dan

I have mine modded with the snap on fans and it stays relatively cool , saying that it does warm up but no worse than my any of my recievers and there not running anything but rca outs. I would like to tear it apart an put heat sink grease under all the heatsinks in there buttt I just got it so warranty wise Im not touching it. Anyone else done this? " He who dies with the most equipment wins Right ? "

Shouldn't be a problem unless you get one of the model that has the fans on screamin high all the time. I returned mine and got another one. No issues after continuous playback upto 12 hours, although mine is sitting at the very top of my AV rack with plenty of air circulation and a ceiling fan nearby.

Mine is on for a few hours every day. Playing music, movies, games, etc. It gets alittle warm but like mantis said, its made to be on and used. Its supposed to get alittle warm.Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.

I know some people who never turn it off. When there not using it they just turn on folding@home.7.1 HOME THEATER:

+1 here! -
Does everyone's PS3 have the fan in high gear during blu-ray playback? Right now I have mine in a tv stand with an open back and glass door front, and it seems pretty loud all the time. And by loud I mean really loud. Our couch is ~15 feet away and it is clearly audible. I need to move it out of the stand and give it a shot. Is it better to have it stand up tall instead of laying flat? I'm looking at buying a new TV stand soon and was hoping to keep all of my components behind a door but maybe that won't be possible with the PS3.

Which version is it?
I had one of the original 20gb's for a while and that was pretty audible when playing anything. Now I have a 40gb and its been dead silent since I got it two weeks ago.Ghetto Rig

Its a 60gb unit, picked it up refurb at a gamestop. The fan does vary with the load. When I initially turn it on its pretty quiet. Listening to music over the network it sounds pretty quiet as well. Gaming/playing a movie sets the fan to overdrive though.
Really wanted to get backward compatability... its too bad if it also means a louder unit -
I have a 60 GB bought within the first year. I also have a cabinet with a glass door in the front. When I run my ps3, I always crack open the door 45 degrees to let it vent. If I don't, the heat will eventually build up within the cabinet and it will raise the fan speed to compensate. With the door open, it is usually very quiet with blu-rays.
How you have it oriented depends on the best way to vent the hot air away from the machine. I believe the fan blows the air out the top (when it's upright). Since I have a tall cabinet, that's the way I have mine since the hot air just rises out the door all the way to the top. If you have an open back, you may want to try directing the opening toward the back of the cabinet by angling the ps3 slightly. It might help with the airflow. The worst thing you can do is have the opening blowing toward a closed wall of the cabinet since the air over the vent has nowhere to go and will start to heat the system. -
Mine is dead quit. I sit about 10 to 11 feet from mine and I don't hear anything. I play games, music and Blu Ray disc and have no audio problems.
Mine is the 80g and it's a few months old.
