Converting LSi15 to LSi9

I am thinking about it because the M/T/M array on the

LSi15 goes from 150Hz to 27KHz (leaving the side firing woofer out) and the

LSi9 from 38Hz to 27KHz...i want a wider range from the LSi15 mtm array

there is quite a bit of info below 150Hz thats too far from the ears
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocal_range

any down side to this conversion?

has anyone done this mod b4 and can i buy the LSi9 xover from polk?

While not an exact to spec mod you could take a double pole double throw switch, and have it both ways. There is a 130uf cap that blocks the bass from reaching the upper drivers, and the sub could be disconected. I don't know how handy you are DIY, but a switch wouldn't be to hard to do, and you would not detract from the performance in "LSI15 mode".

i"m spitballing here, but are you actually hearing an issue with the response below 150, or just uncomfortable with the fact that 150 and below comes out the side woofer?

if your hearing something off on your bottom end, make sure your giving the 15's room to breath out the side and play with placement. effing with the crossover is just not worth it in my eyes.

even if you make the top part into an LSi9, its a different internal volume, which is gonna throw **** off anyway.

There is far more unheard information in the upper register, for most people, than the lower.

Yes, you may purchase the xover from Polk, but why? Have you found a new way to design a loudspeaker, based on a single event?
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Have you looked at the cutaway of the 9's. I don't think the 15's, and the 9's would share the same XO cutout. Have you looked at the schematics yet. I wouldn't be too quick to tear them apart without a little more thought.

    LSi9 + 28" speaker stand + 1 bengal cat = broken LSi9

so besides wanting to extend the lower range of the MTM array, i want those speakers to last more than a day :)

I agree, I would make changes elsewhere before tearing open and possibly messing up the Lsi15's. I presume you are talking about mainly 2 channel performance, try moving the speaker closer to you and toeing them in a little. It looks like you are sitting back a bit and the first reflection points of your right speaker can be hitting your front door alcove without toe in. The stacked subs are also interfering with your soundstage. Also pull the 15's out from the back wall and into the room more, it will not look as nice but should improve the sound substantially.

It looks like you have a wide glass-topped coffee table in front of the couch, if you are that critical of the sound that you are going to change your crossovers, I would nix the table first.

Through my research and speaking with industry pros here and there, it is of the opinion that Ice power amps do not perform as well with ohm dips. Being that the 15's are 4 ohm, this may be a challenge at the lower register.

Every amp is different, some amps are "restricted" when plugged into a power conditiner. Try changing from the high voltage outlet to one of the digital banks on the PF60 and see if you hear a difference. Also try bypassing the PF60 altogether for the amps. I have the PF60 also and like it a lot, but at the end of the day, plugging a high end amp and AVR into a $200 conditioner may not have all its potential. Good luck.

    Polk CS gets 10/10!

the downside to this conversion = port noise

the LSi15 does not have rear port like the LSi9 and all the breathing will be thru the 2 little front ports...low frequency = large cone movement = lot of air moved = annoying port noise. So thats that for this project :o

i got the 28" by measuring from the ground to the MTM section on the LSi15

for my case, the cat jumping from the ground to the top of the LSi15 is not the problem...its the leaping from the LSi15 to the top of the tv shelf is what i'm worried about :(
