We had everything form freezing rain, sleet, then snow for the last two days here but business as usual. To day the sun came out but it's sure cold as hell. I'm off to Cali this weekend and probably enjoy the 70 degree temperature that I missed for a longtime. I've got the tickets for the Laker game tomorrow night.

Yep, it's be raining sun shine all week. Where in Cali are you headed?

So Mantis you have a Xterra? we plan to get one at tax return time and test drove several this year, what do you think of them?
We live in Florida so no real need for4x4 or supercharger, Just a automatic with the 6 banger, full auto... just wanted to know how they hold up, feel after a long drive comfort wise? and see what ya thought. other options are pathfinder, isuzu rodeo, last choice explorer, around the 23-25,000 price range sticker price.MY HT RIG:

He is allabout extera man, allday, it is in his *sole*.
I personally am a die hard Jeep man myself. Tried, proven, true, there is only one. I'm just pissed the ditched the Cherokee and went with the Liberty.
Anywho, Nissan builds a nice rig, how about a new Z instead?

faster100,
back to the Xterra.
The Nissan Xterra can be had for under 30K.There made for outdoor type people.
I own a 2001 model in White. It has a cool **** roof rack with a wet pit.Tow hitch,v6 engine,Power windows and locks, brakes, steering, the usual stuff.4 x 4,big tires and really nice looking rims. The Interior is grey. The cool thing about the interior is that you can take off the seat covers and wah them in a washer machine.SO cool when you got kids. The seat clean right up.We had our fair share of accidents with food and drink, everytime it wiped clean with ease.It also has a built in First aid kid in the rear door.
Driving the truck is a pleasure and fun.Its still rides like a turck but comfortable while doing so.I like driving it in the snow.
The stereo is nice it has 6 speakers,am/fm,cd and tape all in one unit.Sound quality is fine.I put no stock in car radio. But it comes with a nice on all the better.
I considered alot of different trucks before i purchased the Xterra,Dodge Durango was high on my list as well as the Toyota 4 runner Highlander series. Both trucks where over the 34k mark.It didn't matter much, but the Xterra came in under 29K loaded to the gills.
I owned a 1990 Nissan Maxima as my family car and like the Xterra no problems at all.The Maxima I bught used though. It had over 100k miles on it when I traded it in for the Xterra and it sold in 1 hour as we where doing the paperwork on the Xterra,a guy saw it and bought it.Funny I could of sold it to him privately and got more money, but thats that,I'm super happy with the Xterra.Dan

Well far as all the sports cars, Nah.. Don't work real well with 2 small kids and the wife, and stroller, travel crib, diaper bag, tons of toys on long weekends and getaways, So the Exterra for the price and looks suits me great!! Thanks mantis for the review and that just makes me want it even more, We had a 95 mustang from new and the motor went at 110k and we just got rid of it for what we could and got a small economy car until this coming tax return time so we could get the SUV of choice, we have a 4 year old and a 5 month old so we are loaded down with car seats,carriers.. and we are outta room in the compact Toyota we have now. Thanks againMY HT RIG:

Check with Consumers Report auto buying guide before buying a car/truck/van. They do a nice job of telling it like it is.Political Correctness'.........defined

Same here, had a Nissan sentra, then a new mustang, when we didn't have kids, and i REFUSE TO get a mini van, !! period. So its suv and the Exterra has had our eyes for a while. Thanks for the review, and all time all wheel drive does nothing for me, who ever mentioned it, LOL 4x4 should be an option not an all time thing. Thanks everyone... few months left until we start shopping for oneMY HT RIG:

faster,
I've owned 4wd trucks for 30 years, so I speak from experience. If you don't plan on going off-road and I mean other than a gravel road or driving in the snow, then considering you have kids, you'd be much safer in a mini-van or somesuch. Trucks behave very different from cars, it's very easy to roll one. Another thing folks don't seem to realize is that while a 4wd vehicle MAY get you somewhere that a 2wd vehicle won't, they all stop the same, ie. they can slide in the rain and snow just as easily if not more so. Then there is the extra maintenance involved and the extra cost of bigger tires, etc. They sit up higher which makes it harder for kids to get in and out of, not to mention older folks. The thinking that they are somehow safer than other vehicles is dead wrong. Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out.
I don't have kids and used mine primarily for real off-road driving. This photo is of my old Land Crusier, the best 4wd truck probably ever built until the Hummer.

Cool picture and good idea's as well, My father in-law just bought a 2002 honda mini van, It is loaded and very very nice... Just the Mini Van whole grocery getter car, LOL I guess when you have kids and stuff these other reasons are to be considered. we of course don't get snow here in Florida, I actually don't plan to get a 4x4 either as i wouldn't use it and it is added cost getting differentials serviced/repaired when needed, I use to work in a shop for quite a few years until i hurt my back and have seen alot of transfer case leaks, diff leaks and problems if not totally non working and they are costly to repair. all this will be considered when i do start looking to buy, Thanks for all the opinionsMY HT RIG:

F1nut.
Nice Landcruiser. What year was yours? I had a '77 I drove daily for 10 years. Most trouble free vehicle I ever owned. It would go almost anywhere. Rough & rugged for sure.
joe -
joe,
It's a '74 that I rebuilt, all new drivetrain bearings/seals, brakes, "soft springs", shocks, wheels & tires, I installed a Chevy quick ratio power steering unit, engine rebuilt (motor shop did it)bored out .30, ported/polished and other nice stuff. Holley carb w/a new hi-performance manifold, 6 into 1 header with a 2 1/2" free flow exhaust. I had the seats redone and I added a pair of 5 point racing belts. There is alot more, but that covers the bigger stuff.
The thing was a tank, unstopable. It would go where nothing else could, I mean it would eat V8 Jeeps, etc. all day long and you're right, it was trouble free. I was in a 4wd club and we'd have off-road events/races, guys would be chewing up rears/gears/hubs/bearings even blowing motors, I always drove home.
This is after a good day racing!

joe,
I forgot to ask, did you take yours off-road? Did yours have A/C? I didn't and that was the only thing I didn't like about it, but there wasn't anything I could do about it. Got any photos of yours?
Damn, all this is making me want to buy another one!

You had a impressive 4x4. My toy was mostly stock. I did put some better wheels & tires on it. ( BFG 10.50 all terrain at's ) I did some off roading, but nothing too serious. I had it in some pretty tight spots, but always managed to get it out.
I did not have a/c either. Man what was I thinking? That thing has to be one of the hottest vehicles ever made. Should have added air. I did have a pretty nice sound system in it. That was not an easy thing to accomplish in that beast.
I had a buddy that put a souped up 327 v-8 in his toy. Now that was a wild ride. Very serious 4x4. I think it would have climbed trees if it could have got some traction.
I do have some pictures that you might like to see. I can not attach photos to my messages here. I can send photos attached to emails. If you want to, email me at magic69RT@webtv.net and I will send you a test photo.

I'm back to my hometown last night from San Diego, the weather is much warmer now but it's really nothing compare to the weather in CA, in the 70, sunshine everyday, you can have lunch and diner outdoor. BTW, the Laker girls are great and the game in one of the kind. The Laker made the biggest come back in the 4 period, overcome the 30 points deficit and beat Dallas at the last second...what a game...Next stop, the rose bowl...

rose bowl!!! thats no rose bowl the real one is in miami with iowa and usc. what a joke the bcs is!
