why such a sudden interest in SACD in here lately?

Introduced in 1999, it was developed by Sony and Philips Electronics, the same companies that created the Compact Disc. SACD was in a format war with DVD-Audio, but neither format managed to replace regular audio CDs
just curious if people in here are just discovering SACD or what?

When a product such as SACD sounds as good as it does, popularity and those interested in it will rise even though Sony/Phillips seemingly completely abandoned the advertising of SACD's. They sound incredible and IMO have a end result that is the absolute best out of all recording formats.
I didn't even know about it until January or February of last year. I stumbled across it while discussing on another forum why a particular album sounded so good while I was shopping for speakers. Turned out it wasn't the recording, it was the medium [SACD] that sounded so good. I now run SACD in my rig and look forward to getting all of the SACD's I can possibly get my hands on.
Plus, a lot of the SACD's that are out now are hybrids that have two layers and can be played in a normal CDP or an SACD player. Even the hybrid layer can sound better than a redbook CD due to the remastering of the original recording when they made the SACD.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
Fair enough.. i guess some people are in a way re-discovering SACD, or just learning about it for the first time. I had no idea that was possible.. since it's been around nearly a decade now.
I agree.. that they do sound quite a bit better than redbook CD's in most instances. You are one of the people SACD/Sony was going after back then.. but you weren't listening were you? What's wrong with you??
It's all good.. it's cool that people are now paying attention to it. I wonder if they will also bring back DVD-Audio? :eek:When a product such as SACD sounds as good as it does, popularity and those interested in it will rise even though Sony/Phillips seemingly completely abandoned the advertising of SACD's. It was a happy time in audio when sacd and dvd audio hit the market. I remember sitting in our demo rooms just blown away on how good they both sounded. man I wanted them both to just take off. I never was so fustrated trying to buy disc's. Everywhere I went I could barely find anything I wanted. New music would come out and not what I liked on either format.
It really sucked. It really took a long time to get going and shorter time to fade away. I'd love to see sacd make a huge comeback. Worth it to me.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
It's just like vinyl, a great format just won't go away.

SACD never really went away if you are looking at the number of new titles added to sa-cd.net each year....
2004 - 891 (excluding January 2004)
2005 - 806
2006 - 757
2007 - 744
93 new titles so far in 2008
Given the downturn in the sales of music on physical medium, these numbers are quite good. I think the real downturn was the lack of new pop/rock releases. A couple of years back, we had new releases after new releases of pop/rock on SACD from major labels (Dire Straits/the Carpenters/Clapton/Elton John/Duran Duran/Depeche Mode, etc.). Then, all of a sudden, nothing. I don't think this situation is likely to change despite upcoming pop/rock SACDs from Genesis, the Pixies, Dead Can Dance, and a possible Pink Floyd SACD. Of course, unless Sony start up its production line again.... -
Thanks for your post, Danny. I never bothered to break it down that way.Political Correctness'.........defined

No problem. The numbers were provided by this page at sa-cd.net.
I think sa-cd.net is an important resource for SACD fans. Just go check out what's available on the site, but definitely do your shopping online. In extreme cases, you may have to import certain titles simply because they're not released in the States....like the Depeche Mode SACDs. -
SACD is new to me
I am still learning on my audio journey, and it just seems to be the next logical step....

I am primarily an SACD fan. For classical and jazz, this format is superb (especially in multichannel). Since my player also decodes DVD-A, I do have a few of these titles as well. My most recent purchase was Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King soundtrack. It is VERY expensive...but well worth it in my opinion. The collection includes four CDs (which I left in my car) and one DVD-A. The DVD-A has the entire "extended" soundtrack in multichannel...and will really put your audio system to the test. Simply fantastic.

SACD was designed very well, IMHO.
Two channel stereo purists have access to a hi-rez 2 channel mix, and when available, SACD can provide a hi-rez multi-channel surround mix, while maintaining backward compatibility with existing CD players if released as a hybrid SACD. Set-up can really easy and can be done without OSD over a monitor....DVD-A is more troublesome in this regard. -
Bought my first one this weekend...3 doors down ( Away from the Sun ) ...sound quality is amazing but even more so for me was the surround steering.
It was like having a ghost in the room it was so believable...had to relisten to certain passages just hear the difference between the redbook cd and the sacd .The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
After spending some time this weekend getting to know my SACD collection again, I'd say the sudden interest is due to the fact the things sound damn good. Vinyl's been my format of choice lately, I like the "naturalness" that it has. Super Audio gets pretty close to that magic I hear in vinyl, but it does other things better. Top end sparkle is there, decay is better. Soundstage and imaging are right there as well. If you're the least bit curious, get $250 or so together, get one of the Oppo's everybody talks about, Floyd's Dark Side and The Allman Brother's Live at the Fillmore East. Even (or especially, depending on your tastes) running a 2 channel set up, you'll know what the hype's about.Wristwatch--->Crisco

I have been a fan of SACD for about five years now. Back when you were able to actually go to the SACD section at Best Buy. Those were the days. Sigh....
I prefer the format to DVD audio because I can browse other tracks without stopping play. You do have to read the lables closely though! They don't display if it's hybrid, stereo or mult-channel in big bold text.
I'm gradually building on the collection for my sony mega changer. Someday soon it will be full of 400 SACD and live DVD DTS concert ear-candy! My favorite track thus far for SACD was actually off one of the sample CD's. Roger Waters' Perfect Sense. At least I think that's the title. The female vocals are damn near spine tingling! My favoritet SACDs are any James Taylor while my favorite live concert DVD in DTS is the Alison Krauss and Union Station Live Performance. Good stuff!Left & Right: LSi15's

why such a sudden interest in SACD in here lately?
Because there are ultra-rare SACD titles such as this Scorpions multi-channel hybrid SACD....

Go ahead....click on the link I provided above on the Scorpions SACD and see how much that disc went for.

$135!!! Sorry, the Scorpians are good band , but, NOT that good. I might pay that kind of $ for the 'White album' but.....
I wonder if there's any geek/audiophile out there who can pirate/ write the software to burn SACD's on a pc? I figure, if Sony won't support it, then F*CK them!I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -
Well, the LP was introduced in 1948, and there seems to be a reasonable amount of interest in these, too.
The 300B power triode was introduced in the 1930s, and they seem to be at least reasonably popular with folks today (even some of the folks here).
So... why not SACD? -
just saying that maybe new formats take 9 yrs before the masses warm up to them... so maybe SACD is finally reaching the masses now.
listeners are now finding out what potential SACD has.... just wish DVD-Audio had survived too. I actually preferred DVD-Audio because of the ability to also hold video media. But lets not get into THAT debate.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Now that I have a Denon 3910 on the way, I will be able to listen to my first SACD within a few days. I've known about the format for a couple of years but never had the $$ or opportunity to listen. Does anyone want to throw out some advice on good discs to own? I like Jazz and Classical and will definitely be buying the Boston Symphony Chamber Players disc recommended on one of the other threads.____________________________________________________________

Listening to the Allman Brothers Fillmore East SACD and it is as good as it gets.

There are so many great titles. My collection is listed at SA-CD net:
http://www.sa-cd.net/library/4113
One of my favorites is RAY SINGS & BASIE SWINGS. OMG! They took a 1970's live recording of Ray Charles and married it to a brand new recoding session with the Count Basie orchestra. This SACD is awesome!
The LORD OF THE RINGS soundtrack on DVD-A is pricey but outstanding. Well worth the $$$.
I am hopeful as blu-ray takes over...we will see more plentiful High Rez releases...since the music is already mixed for high rez.
