Im looking to upgrade my 40gb harddrive in my ps3. I was wondering if anyone here has done it and maybe some insight on how there experience went. Basically im trying to decide which harddrive to buy. Im looking to spend around 100 dollars. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

I haven't done it yet, but supposed to be a simple swap. I quick Google search turned up this link:

You'll need a notebook driv e I believe... -
Its easy as hell ( I replaced my 60 with a 120...also consider going from 5400 to 7200rpm...contrary to popular belief laptop 7200rpm drives do not get very hot ) ....and there are about 20 tutorials online with pictures even to make your transition very easy. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club

One of the main questions I have is do I need a harddrive with a certain connector.
Or will any ATA 2.5 harddrive work?Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables. -
I'd suggest talking to Avelanchefan on this. He's the king of modding on this forum. Not sure if he's modded his PS3, but I know he's done a lot of other stuff.....

I swapped the hard drive on both my ps3 from 60 to 250.
It takes 5 minutes. All you have to do is remove the plastic snap on cover, remove 1 screw, pull out the hard drive caddy and remove the 4 screws that hold the hd to the caddy. Reverse the removal process. Once installed all you have to do is format hte drive and you're good to go.
Just remember you have to use a sata small form factor hard drive with the ps3.

Here's a link back to the original thread we were talking on in case you lost it. Be sure to check out the youtube videos on how to install it:

What about all the data on the orignal drive? Is there some kind of ghost program to move the data??Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
There is a backup utility in the system menu. It seems like it can backup game settings and data to an external storage device. I've never used it, but from the description, it would seem to be the answer you're looking for.

Or just drop the drive in your PC and copy it over using something like Ghost or TrueImage...then deploy that image over to the new drive and install
-
Don't forget to drop the old drive in a cheap external case when you're done with it. It makes a great portable compact HDD.
-
People have used this one with good results as well. ITs a lil cheaper.

Thanks Demi....But no I have not done anything with my PS3. In fact it is primarily being used as a BR/SDDVD player, and .avi converter right now. I have looked at the HDD upgrade, but have not had the inclination to start monkeying around with another system again.
Now when the boot loaders come up....if ever, then you will see me start taking a huge interest in this. -
Just upgraded from the 40gb to a WD 5400rpm 160gb! It took 5 mins! I started importing cds last night! Hey I have a question BOPicasso. When installing a new hard drive does the ps3 add all the folders for you? Or do you have to tweak the hdd before installing it into the ps3? -
When I installed it, it asks to format, after you format, you are back to normal. Except everything you saved is gone. All my settings are still intact.Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.
-
So you don't have to copy the old drive to the new one? Sony just keeps the full OS on the machine itself?
-
The OS isnt on the harddrive so you dont have to worry about losing anything except stuff you saved.Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.
