They would have to degrade in their orbit enough to re-enter the atmosphere. When something that large is screeching through an orbit that fast, it carries a great deal of inertia. When you all of a sudden turn the one gigantic piece of equipment into thousands of tiny bits of equipment, you may have bled off some inertia but you still have imparted the same level of energy on those smaller pieces. With that much energy imparted onto an object with a drastically reduced level of weight, those tiny pieces will continue to orbit for years, maybe even decades, before the orbit degrades enough to re-enter the atmosphere far enough to burn up.

John, I was just messin with ya earlier...:D

    I believe, in 2 things.

    1. That my family comes first.

    and....

    2. That governements will hide and/or will not disclose information, that they feel will jeperdize their cover in special ops situations. Is it a good thing or bad thing? I dont know. There are many things I feel my children do not "need" to know about at this time. Because if knowing, certain things might happen that will either endanger them or discredit them.

I feel the government has the right to not disclose secret information, in trying to preserve the American way of life. Are they right or wrong in this situation? I dont know. I do know, that in the wrongd hands, a US spy satelite, can pose a very dangerous threat on our country.

I dont like being left in the dark, but sometimes its for good reasons.

Now, if Aliens land, they better the hell tell me.

    Just my opinion.

If it does have secret info and we destoy it, Ok
If it doesnt and we are flexing our muscles, Ok
If we are using this excuse for testing new software and tracking abilities, Ok

I have no problems with any of the above.

It's a message being delivered to China, amongst others.

What's interesting, and not related, is that there is a lunar eclipse that will occur tonight about 9:00 pm in the Midwest.

    That'll mean a "Red Moon".

So, NASA fireworks and a "Red Moon"; I hope some folks read the papers ahead of the events, and don't panic.

What's funny is there was a huge storm of criticism when China did this to their sat because of the debris they created, but now we're doing the same thing, with the same results.

It's impressive they can get the ballistics accurate enough to nail that sucker though.

And as for the conspiracy stuff, there would be no film on it - it's all digital these days. The only things that are sensitive would be the encryption chips and maybe some of the other hardware, but that stuff would probably burn up in the atmosphere. Plus, I can pretty much guarantee you they could de-orbit the satellite where-ever they wanted - most of them have the ability to change their orbit.

I would guess the reasons are political - to show we can shoot down satellites. Unless of course the sat is powered by a nuclear reactor and letting it re-enter and burn up would cause more fallout than shooting it down....

You might be able to see it with a telescope. I'm not exactly sure where it will happen but the orbit might actually be low enough that if you aren't on the west coast, it might be obscured by the horizon. Then again, it's going to happen so fast that you won't see much. You might see the plume of Hydrazine fuel if they actually hit the fuel tank where they want to but again, might not.

Actually, the reason there was such a huge story when China did it was because the Satellite was in a higher orbit which could have harmed other satellites and future space missions. This time it's a bit different due to the difference in orbits. This satellite is in a much lower orbit meaning that the debris won't come close to contacting any other satellites. Plus, this satellite has a high risk of falling to Earth in the not so distant future where as the Chinese satellite could probably remained much longer.

Lotsa memos and celebratory stuff going on at work today. Everybody is happy and proud. Cool morale booster especially after all the problems that have been in the news lately with all the program problems that have been happening.

BTW, due to all the "tinfoil hat" comments, if anyone actually read the articles I posted, you would have seen that the satellite was from the National Reconnaissance Office. What do you think recon is if it isn't spying?

I only mentioned tin foil hat because I thought it was funny and you seemed overly paranoid. Naturally it was most likely a spy satellite. When the announcement was made that it was destroyed, they even mentioned that they didn't want any of it falling into the wrong hands.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if most, if not all satellites (other than natural satellites of course) are capable of spying in different ways.

I'm not paranoid about it. I just have a connection with that ship and the BMD systems on it. I built the ship (not by myself, there were others too although I'd be pretty awesome if I did do it all by myself!), I installed the BMD systems on it (again, not by myself), I tested the operation of those systems (again...) and was on four of the flight missions (and yet again...) that the Navy had to determine capabilities and sign off on the system. Like I said, more than a passing interest.
