Question about my DSW Pro 600

Just a random question...

I have the Onkyo 605(B) receiver. One of the options in the speaker setup is "Double Bass". Here is how I set my bass up:

I turned the volume up as high as I dare to get it on the sub itself (I have no idea how high it can go, since Polk didn't include a display or gauge for volume).
Then I turned the sub "db" on my receive to -15(max). From there I slowly turned "up" the db until I got the bass sound I was looking at.

Here is my question: Without "Double Bass" enabled, even at high volumes the Polk sub sounds either WAY under-powered, or it sounds really bad and distorted.

Am I doing something wrong? Granted, I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to HT setup, so any advice would be great.

Thanks!

    Hi ryanjoachim,

Just set your sub's volume control at half way point and then do the audessy auto setup.

That's the problem...on this sub there's no way to know where the "half-way" point is. There's no gauge, knob, level monitor...nothing.

Just a light that blinks whenever I turn it up. So far I've clicked like 15 times and the light keeps blinking the same as when I turn it down.

    Am I missing something here?

No promises as I don't have the same sub, but the # of blinks and the speed in which they blink determines what volume the sub is at. It should be discussed in the owner's manual.

Also, it would be recommended to refer to your owner's manual on you AVR to make sure thayt you have the sub hooked up correctly and then to make sure that the settings within the AVR are correct.

page 10 of the manual does discuss the front LED blinking to indicate the volume. Read it :)

    I'll read that, thank you.

Now, just to check...I have a digital coax cable going from the LFE spot on my sub to the sub input on my receiver...does that sound like a proper way to do it?

use a cable with RCA connectors on each end, an normal audio cable, I am sure this is what you meant, not a digital coax.

Connect the RCA interconnect cable from the receivers "LFE out" or "Subwoofer "out" to the subwoofers LFE input.

    What receiver are you using?

    I'm using my Onkyo 605(B)

And it actually is a Digital Coaxial cable (the audio variety)

And my sub only has 1 "Sub" input. Just a single input, not 2 like RCA.

Wow, the blinking light volume control is perhaps the worst design feature of the Velodyne DPS series. I'm really surprised that Polk chose to copy it. Supposedly, this was a request put in by CC so that their sales reps could easily demo the unit (Velo).

An SPL meter is essential for you to be able to tell what gain to set your sub.

Well, the sub is sounding pretty good right now, but that's WITH "Double Bass" on. Without it on the sub seems...weak. Would the low pass knob have any impact on that?

BTW...what the heck IS the low pass filter for?

You are using the subwoofer out on the receiver, so you should set the low-pass filter on the subwoofer to it's highest setting.

A low-pass filter is a filter that passes low-frequency signals but attenuates (reduces the amplitude of) signals with frequencies higher than the cutoff frequency.

Hey, just a thought, read the frigging manual, full of good information.

I read parts of the manual...but like I said, a lot of the fancy words and such go right over my head.

No he's not cranky (well I don't know, maybe he is :D ) but I assume you're comment is directed to his about reading the manual? If so, it was good advise. The questions keep coming and with each one it's becoming more clear that he hasn't read the manual and isn't well versed in setting it up; he's missing some fundamental knowledge. For example, asking what low pass is after configuring it using incorrect methods and maybe even doing things that could damage the sub or AVR. It's becoming very clear that reading the manual is very good advise.

It's good constructive advise that the OP shouldn't be offended by and should appreciate the value in.
