Just an update to inquire on who is still using it.

Question: Calibrating the Rat Shack meter is fairly simple since HTS has a cal. already to import. But, has anyone tried any other mics? Is the analog rat shack working out ok you? How often do you calibrate?

I was thinking about using the mic that came with my HK. How well would it work?

Po

Just a few questions to throw out there....:p

Rat shack meters can vary by up to 2 dB from reference, if memory serves me right.

Try any mic you can get your hands on.

I know, but the nice ppl at HTS provided a calibration that can be installed along with REW.

I might give my HK mic a try

Play with phase and placement till that nice dip from 60-80 gets better.

I was just about to say the same thing. That dip from 60-80 Hz shows up consistently.

The graph is not as bad as you might think. You would get a better idea of the dips and peaks by using a linear scale for frequency.

There also seems to be a dip from 200-300 and a very narrow dip around 500 Hz. What kind of room treatments do you have(carpet, blinds, sound panels, etc...)?

Thats from the HK auto Eq.

Dont know what to do about the dip @~500hz.

    Room treatments?????
Lets see, hmmmmmmm, the wife put curtains, added a love seat and another recliner. Carpet floors. Thats about it...lol

    No treatments.

That's plenty of treatment for an average room.

I have plaster ceilings, hardwood floors, and no rugs.

The dip above 500 Hz is so narrow that you would be wasting time trying to track it down. Move the speakers a few inches or play with the toe in to see if that changes it.

With everything, carpet and all, I have very little, if any, reflections. My biggest problem is valted ceilings, but its not so bad.

Adjusted sub xover and toed in the 7's just a bit. The responce is much better in stereo, but in Logic 7 surround, I'm still getting a dip around 500 and spikes around 5khz. I cant measure above 8khz, so I dont know about the top end.

    Will keep playing with it....

Do your speakers have a crossover point at 500 Hz? Are the 7's three ways?

That could be it, but I doubt it.

Can you do a near field test? Have the mic 1" from the driver you are testing(woofer or tweeter) and run the same test at a low volume. This can help determine if the dip is from the speakers or room reflections.

The only speakers I have in use that have a crossover @~500 are the mid bass drivers in the small surrounds. The Polk monitor 7's are 2 way.

    I doubt it as well...

After much headache, I was able to accomplish this. I sure stepped in a big pile of doo doo, getting started with this calibration....

Keep in mind, the HK and the RS mics are not trust worthy above 12khz.

In both graphs, I used the HK's mic. I did install the RS mic calibration, but to me, the HK's mic still did a better job.

    ...or I could be dreaming..:o

The first graph is PllxII with 1/3 octave (blue)

The second is Stereo w/ .5 octave. (yellow)

Take into mind, that my sub is tuned too low, so adjustments will be made there,,,,

I dont think I can fix that dip between 800hz and 1500hz, without modding the crossover or buying a Eq,

The guys over at home theater shack, are very knowledgable, but they are telling me its not right because of the mic I used and the way I calibrated everything. They said I should run the mic to the Line In instead of the Mic In.

But when I do that..things get screwy between the mic and the Pc.

    I'm so confused....:confused::confused:

Anyways, I looked at the the shack a bit myself, and have been meaning to get into REQ too. Did you do the loop back configure of the of the line out and line in?

    Just a small update.

After tweeking it abit, I have a graph, from 10hz - 500hz, the bass to midbass region. I have learned the RS metere is not reliable beyond 1khz.

This is taken with a 1/1 scale. I usually look at a 1/3 scale but this scale give a better peeks and nulls.

The sub is xo'd at 120hz while the mains are @ 80hz, after some phase issues, I think it came out pretty well. I know it sounds alot better now.

No Equ'ing, just simple adjustments like phase and HK's xover settings. I have no eq in the mix. Actually I do not own an eq.

If your going to sweep a room do it one speaker at a time not all at once. For a sub set the range to 10 too 200hz. For the mains set it to 10 to 20000hz and then run them one at a time. The Radio shack sucks both low and high and the mic that came with your avr may work but you don't have a Cal file for it so again not a good choice.

It did look like you have some of the issues fix post the file for your sub I want to look at the it and if you post a file other's can run it on there system.
