PS3 Price Cuts on the horizon...thanks IBM!

Yeah, IBM took the 65nm Cell processor and cut size down to 45nm. That means less power consumption, cooler running and cheaper parts in a smaller package.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080207-ibm-shrinks-cell-to-45nm-cheaper-ps3s-will-follow.html

It's not faster though but the Cell is a supercomputing based processor and has ample horsepower and overhead for something as mundane as graphics processing and video games. I mean, this same processor is in thousands and thousands of IBM Blade Servers around the world crunching numbers at insane rates. Probably not as impressive to most as it is to me but it's pretty much evidence that while the PS3 is not very well liked, it's engineered beyond what it needs to be. Some think that's a bad thing, I think it was a smart thing to do especially since Sony took it on the chin with the PS1 when the console was old and new games were coming out that were taxing the computing resources of the unit.

Or Sony could keep the price at where it's at and actually start making money on the units sold...

Ps3 is cheap enough. With all that it can do, I can't see anyone being mad about it's asking price. If you are then you need to get out of this hobby.
I would have paid alot more due to all the things it can do not to mention the fanstatic Blu ray player it is.

My opnion it's the best one on the market.

My only concern about the PS3 as a player is the noise some people have complained about, fan noise in particular, any comments on that?

I have one, well worth the money, but it could always be better. :)

I want one with more formats supported, and as standard width audio component to go with the rest of the stuff. Then it would be close to perfect. Not holding my breath on that one, I'll just settle for a standalone when they drop in price.

I have the 80 g unit and mine lives inside a Salamander tripple 20 with a door in front of it. I sit about 10.5 feet away from it and I don't hear it at all. If I mute the system and open the door, I can hear alittle hard drive wind sound but it's very faint. It's a non issue with me. My xbox360 lives up a shelf on the same side and it's alittle louder but still a non issue when watching HD DVD movies.

I've got the 40 and sit about 7' away from it, it's not in any enclosure and I cannot hear it.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Tell me, is there any reason to buy an 80G if you are not going to put any music on it? The 80 comes with Motostorm which is a suck game anyway is what I hear.

I don't have any old games so I might as well bag the cheaper one.
