Ok heres one for you....................

I use my DVD for DVDs and CDs. Its an Onkyo DV CP704. I use the HDMI output to the receiver. If I play DVDs no problem. When I try to play CDs the HDMI output on the player starts going in and out and displaying error messages. The only way to fix this is to turn on the TV.

I want to get this set up to remove the step of turning on then turning off the TV just to listen to CDs. I have tried connecting the optical output in addition to the HDMI output but that doesn't work either.

Go into setup, and make sure the HDMI output to the TV is set to: Audio Out "no", or "off".

If William's suggestion doesn't work, make sure you have that optical cable routed to a different input. ie: HDMI to DVD input, optical cable to CD input, (go to digital in assignment in setup menu). Then you should easily be able to listen to CDs over optical without worrying about HDMI handshake issues.
See profile for rigs. Nothing else here.
