5 subs . maybe more

What do you think about more then 2 subs in a HT system. I currently have 3 Def Tech pro sub 8's for the LCR. And 2 Energy Subs for the LFE and presently in the rear. I'm accustomed to ALL of them and not thinking of getting rid of any. Also i'm thinking of replacing the LFE's for the Emotiva subs. Is this overkill???? Thanks for all who respond.

I think you'll find people will tell you that there will be cancellation issues with that many subs, and that it's too difficult to calibrate them all.
I ran two subs once upon a time, and even though (or because?) they were two different models and mfrs', it was too easy to localize the bass, especially in a h/t setup.

Fast forward to last May... bought an SVS PB12-NSD/2 sub, sold the other two, and never looked back. Even in a 15 x 25 x 8 room, this thing can shake the foundation, but can also disappear when necessary.

But, hey, whatever sounds good to you is all that really matters, right?
And welcome to the Club. ;)
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I don't think it's overkill, as long as you calibrate them very well. As long as you cannot localize the bass and calibrate them for your room dimensions, I think that many subs is okay.

With that many subs, I highly recommend the Velodyne SMS-1

I don't like multible subs. I have installed multible subs and I find that more then 2 is overkill. Unless you have a movie theater size room in your house , you are wasting money or just not appling it correctly.

If you own 5 subs, add the price of all those subs together and devide it by 2. Then shop for 2 subs of higher quality . This will yield way better results in the room. You also can take all that money and buy a really high end sub.

Martin Logan Decent and Depth subs can fill a large room all by there selves with no help. I'm talking 16 x 25 or even larger. Once you hit 20 x 30 + you will need 2 of them.

I suggest selling them all and getting a higher end sub or 2. After that your on your own.

Velo works great with up to 3 subs only, otherwise you need to daisy chain another SMS-1 to work with 5 correctly.

or you could use a splitter on the other two, it would still work.

You could, but then the subs that you have split on the SMS-1 will not be room corrected if you have them in multiple positions. It will only work with 3 subs colocated, should be able to get away with it if the subs are stacked.

I don't think it is overkill, just poor planning, akin to stacking speakers or running set A and B together in 2 channel mode. ;) Get 1 or 2 quality subs and call it good....oh yeah, welcome.

Just finished watching Transformers. With all "those" subs it sounded so nice. And yes it doesn't cancel each other out. It's all personal preference.

I think you'd be happier with one or two big sub(s). Probably get lower and faihful extension, and plenty volume to not risk any damage.

My thoughts exactly. Dual PB13s, Epik Conquest or even the PB12 Plus/2s on sale @ SVS.
