To have 4 speakers in 2 channel stereo.

Yes. You can hook up just the fronts if you like.

Better check your manual and maybe even check with Onkyo Customer Service.

I have a Yamaha RX-V1800 and was thinking of doing the same thing, but the manual was explicit in NOT connecting up the pre outs AND the speaker outs at the same time.

However, on the AVS Forum, someone else did this exact thing and the universe did not implode :p

Do so at your own risk.

Good call Erik. I have done that before with one of my old Yamis and had no problem, but the manual might know best.

I've done that with a HK and it wasn't a problem.

The manual does not go into detail about adding
    amps.

I think it ment, not the same channels. But if you run the mains pre's, then just dont hook anything up to the AVR's mains speaker out. But using any AVR's pre/outs and using the AVR to drive the OTHER channels will never be a problem.

Agree - same channel hookups for the pre outs and speaker outs is what is not advised - at least for the Yamaha (pg 29 of the RX-V1800 owners manual).

    Other AVRs may be different.

That it 'works' in other instances may indicate that the owner's manual is over conservative.

Still - if someone were to run into an issue later with the unit, it may void any warranty.

Someone told me to use the amp on the front preouts
and run another set of speakers using the back surround
    channels.
But how will that work in 2 channel mode.
Looking to use both pairs of RTi8s in 2 channel
    audio.

This afternoon a friend of a friend came over with
a Adcom cfa545 to try on my 805.
Hooked it up on the L&R front preouts.
Played some cds in 2 channel stereo using
    a pair of RTi8s.
It sure seems like the adcom has more power
rated @ 100 wpc and the 805 claims 130 wpc.
    Sounded great (powerful).
I'm not sure how the wifes going to react when
i tell her i need to buy a amp.
I was thinking of selling the 805 but maybe
    i will just add on.

Don't think there is a receiver on the market today that lets you use pre outs and speaker connections on the same channel.Nobody does that for the obvious reason. When useing a pre out for any channel, the amp part of the receiver is dead to that channel.

Should be in your receivers set up menu. You should be able to set up the source,cd,and assign what speakers you want while in stereo. Now 2-channel direct is different,if you have that option.

I'd keep the 805 and use it as a pre amp. It has a ton of bells and whistles. If you need more power you can bridge that receiver to run huge amounts of power to the front speakers. Only problem with that is that you can not use the surround channels.

I am using my 805 to power my center and my surrounds. I am using an Adcom gfa 555 to drive my rti12's.

"Huge amounts of power" and a receiver don't equate.

What are your speakers? example:If your fronts are RTi10 and the other pair are bookshelves, you can probably run the 10's from the A channel preouts thru an amp, then the bookshelves on B channel. Then just leave it in stereo w/ both channels on.
