Hey Gals and Guys,

Do you think a HK-3485 (Harmon K - Link to product)

Would be sufficient to drive rti10's to a normal to above normal volume? I'm not looking for glass shattering loudness.

Comments on how they might match up?

Just so you know - I own the HK-3485 presently. Also have a old HK AVR 80 mkII, an really old Marantz (about 35wpc - think soothing blue glow) and a Pioneer VSX-816.

Specs from HK:
120 Watts per channel, 20Hz – 20kHz @ <0.07% THD, both channels driven into 8 ohms
150 Watts per channel, 20Hz – 20kHz @ <0.2% THD, both channels driven into 4 ohms

I have an 3480 that has driven towers and bookies very well. I think it would give the RTi10s a good run, and you could always add an external amp down the road.

I think you'd be surprised how well the HK will sound on the 10s.

Now you are at post two:) I would say welcome to CP, but it is a little late. Of receivers I think that yours is probably one of the better ones to drive RTI's with. I am definitely an amp guy. Even a lower powered high currant amp usually does better than a receiver. I would say go ahead, and try it. Also check out some HiFi shops that let you audition an amp in home. It's not so much about power, and high levels, but SQ. Let your ears be the judge. Receivers typically don't have the headroom, or dampening factor that bring out the best in real nice speakers. I strongly recommend using the search feature. There have been a lot of post recently on driving RTI's with amps. Also great deals can be found on used equipment like Adcom's, and Parasound's.
Happy hunting, and if you want advice on an amp you are looking at please ask.

    Ben
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben

You own the HK and are thinking of buying 10's?

Wonder how much longer the Fry's deal will last ... it's been hitting all the deals sites in the last day or so

Sorry, I have bought the RTi 10's (I haven't set them up yet) and I am looking for a new AVR to use with them.

FWIW, the modest h/k 147, which claims just 50w/ch in stereo use, was measured in a December 2007 bench test to actually output about 90w/ch in stereo. I wonder how much that 3485 actually does put out.

http://hometheatermag.com/receivers/1107rack/index5.html (first paragraph below the graph).

Otherwise, in two channel, I have tried NAD, and even rated at just 50w/ch it totally blew the doors off. I wonder if anyone here is using one of those in a two channel setup using RTi10s.
    Alea jacta est!

Wow, I just looked up the HK 630 (the version before my 635) on hometheatermag. It does 147 watts into 4-ohms in stereo. That's pretty impressive for a receiver. . . I guess their claim of 45 amps of current might be true.

And I think I read somewhere, Andy , that our 635 has a bigger power supply than the 630. I forgot where I read it.

I dont know about you, but I'm perfectly happy with mine, even though I have no HDMI
