I was disappointed in this one. It's a great example of good actors with a bad story. It sucked.

OK, just finished it. Clint needs to teach them how to make a western! It was good, but not outstanding. It just seemed to drag and be predictable.

    *****SPOILER*****

The so-called hero of the movie (Christian Bale) was a punk-**** ****!! His son had more balls than he did. First rule of movie-making -- don't make the hero weak throughout the whole movie because the audience won't support him/her. Rule #2 - a modern action flick with CGI can be implausible, but a Western should be somewhat believable. The movie was filled with moments that make you say, "WTF?" The ending is a perfect example. Why did the villian kill his own men?

Wasn't all that terrible. Unbelievable sure, but still a good flick.

Great acting all the way around. Good screenwriting, good sound, and common, it wasn't that hard to figure out why he killed his stupid guys at the end... he was more impressed with the, "Tough son of a ****" farmer, then any of his lameass men. Besides, he was ready to sling it single for a while, and head back to the "Farmer's" widow ;) Not that hard to figure out if ya put your mind to it...

I freaking love Westerns. Own at least 50, but this is the stupidest, most unbelievable one I've ever seen.
Great cast, great acting, good costumes and set. But a totally unbelievable plot and script make this western not worth it's weight in horsesh*t.

Good storie Line, Good after the Bad like most western movies with a great deal of moral and ethical decisions and insight being made/realised on both sides and also beteween father and son. I felt the the events of days past built a stronger relationship between the two.

Too stand by your beliefes, follow through as set out is the basis of this movie. I would say that it was well written and directed but lacked a decent or resonable ending.

I dislike it when writters and directors do that. I myself would give it a 3.5/5 and I could potentially see myself watching it again in the future.

Definatly worth while seeing and adding to the personal list of titles you own.

Too stand by your beliefs, follow through as set out is the basis of this movie. I would say that it was well written and directed but lacked a decent or reasonable ending.

This is why I liked the movie as well. I disagree that Bale's character was a poor choice in a protagonist. By the end of his character's development, he certainly was worth rooting for.

The ending could have been better. It could have been tied up cleaner. I could have understood it better, but those reasons don't make it a bad ending. I liked the ending, it worked, it makes sense if you give it some thought.

Just got done watching this and I thought it was quite good. Kept me interested the whole way through. But, the thing that destroyed the plotline that everyone is asking about the ending was this. When Charlie said to the other guys "Remember what he did for us..." that left a gigantic plot hole and totally shut down the character development of Ben Wade. Why was Ben so great to these guys? What'd he do that was so awesome that earned him their undying loyalty?

You never learn where Ben Wade came from in the movie. If you don't know where he came from, the ending makes no sense.

The movie was almost two hours and while the movie was not about Ben Wade, it was about Dan Evans, I can see why the background to Ben Wade was cut out in reference to time. However, it hurt the ending a good deal and if they would just tell you what's so great about Ben Wade to make Charlie say that, that would make the ending make sense and probably make it believable. And the BS in the hotel room about Ben Wade's momma leavin' him at the train station is not "background". It's motivation but it doesn't give you any real insight to the human mind of Ben Wade, just the criminal motivation and mind.

I think I'm gonna wait for the DVD with deleted scenes or at least a director's cut of the movie. There's stuff missing. This isn't complete. For now, it was a good movie with the potential to be a great movie. Good story too I thought.

i thought the movie was just ok... not one I would ever own, but as a rental I liked it enough to not turn it off. it was slow in some parts.. and how many bad shooters were there in this movie exactly?

I didn't care for the ending either... when he gets back on the train. that sucked.

he got on the train so that dan didn't die in vain. he did it for dan's son. to make a believer out of his son for his father. sure, dan got him TO the train, but not on it. but notice as the train pulled away, wade had no intentions of staying aboard long. he whistled for his horse to follow. the ending sort of leaves you with a feeling wade will do a 180 and change his ways and live out a normal man's life. but that is what kills it. he kept bragging how evil a man he is, and for him to become inspired by dan, well, that's just too much hollywood for my liking.

and yes, he'd probably go love up dan's widow.

My big problem with this movie is the ending and lead up to the ending.
Dan has a chance to go home to his wife with his son and full pay from the man who started the whole thing. Who himself is quitting the quest.
Instead he decides to in effect commit suicide, leaving his children fatherless and his wife alone to face a hard life trying to keep things together, so that he can die in a brief moment of glory to prove something to his son?
Are you kidding me? This is a hero? This is an egomaniac. A loser hell bent on glorifying himself at the cost and suffering of his loved ones, and for no real purpose at all.
And Ben, who has been self serving most of his life, but at least is honest about it, is supposed to be so...taken by this losers 2 minute life story of being shot, while running away as a coward,
that he kills all of his own men, whom he's known and ridden with for years, and who have done nothing other than try and help him?

well, dan's character lived his life with his head hung low and even his own family didn't show him respect besides the youngest son. he had something to prove. but i agree trub, that was still some lame **** choice on his part. somewhere deep down he must have felt that wade would love up his sweet woman, thus not making it worthwhile. yeah, and he saw that even his wifey wanted to jump on wade's pole. i know it's just a movie, but still...

Rented this last night. Was going for American Gangster until I saw it was 3 hours long.

Decent movie. I really like Christian Bale in pretty much everything, but I didn't feel this was one of his better performances / roles. Just seemed kind of stupid at the end from both lead characters' perspectives. Why would Bale, a family man, risk it all so he would be remembered as a "hero" instead of a handicapped person, failed rancher, etc.? Why totally change your stance on things at the tail end of the movie?

Also, why the hell would bad **** Crowe put his own tail on the line so this guy could feel good about himself? No respectable gangster / criminal would put someone else's life / wishes ahead of their own like that. Thought it was a stupid ending.

Also, from the beginning I thought it would play out like Unforgiven as Clint started that movie as an old, washed up cowboy and ended as an ****-kicking maniac. His character development seemed real and exciting. Bale's seemed forced and retarded.

Anyway, 7/10 for me, too. BTW, I swore I was watching a high def film. This thing (even in SD) looked awesome on my Plasma through my XA1. Have been watching too many movies on my bedroom LCD, almost forgot how great my older plasma looks when fed a good signal.

I thought that was what made it good/different. Dan could have made the logical choice, but he is flawed. So he jacked it up instead. I was entertained by his stupidity. Overall, I liked it, but not a classic by any means.
