I have the HD-DVD player by Toshiba(hda-3). I keep getting a error messages. It says error message 408bc504. Do i need to the update?
I am almost ready to throw this thing out the window and buy the x-box with hd drive. By the way people who have compared the X-Box drive to Toshiba players. What was better?

It is frustrating ..I know..
I know it would be bad for buisness, but alot (mostly all) of the manufactures should have a discaimer, saying, firmware update in future might be required for this player. But it is aggrivating that some players cannot do what they are sold to do, right out of the box..
I dont mind updating firmware, but update for ADDED features, NOT HAVE TO UPDATE TO GET IT TO WORK...Monitor 7b's front

if it were something other than software or electronics this would be called defective. Why software and electronics get a pass I have no idea.
The other thing that irritates along these lines is that these companies assume people have high speed internet. I don't use the internet much, and dial-up fits my needs. Now if they make high speed internet available for $10 then I will take it since that is what I pay for dial up.
I don't see a need to pay $30 a month just so I can download firmware updates for defective merchandise. -

exactly.. why do HD players need so many firmware updates anyway? just to play certain movies? that seems wrong. does it also unlock extra player features?PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

If the video quality of HD or Blue wan't as good as it is, I wouldn't use it at all.DVD was fine.Dan

One-The error is a disc reading error.
Two- Firmware upgrades haven't been proven to fix disc reading errors. Some have claimed it has, but the firmware was written to address issues really other than reading discs.
Three- The tiniest of anything on the disc causes 95%+ of all errors. It sucks, but I clean every disc I play and since only have had one issue of this nature and it was a light scratch. I've had brand new disc's that had the tiniest of a smudge on it and it didn't play at that point.
Blu ray uses a thin layer of disc protector, but that hasn't worked out yet either.
Firmware updates may make the machine pass over a section it cant read if its small enough, but its up to the laser itself whether it'll read a disc or not and has nothing to do with the software.
Its also been stated that since the release of the first gen machines, the lower quality machines get a plastic lens instead of a glass one. That I think it the base root of the problem. -
Luckly, my XA1 has had no issues at all. Even with its original, no problems. Load time has sped up since current updates, but other than that...no problems.Monitor 7b's front
