No need to if the player is capable of decoding the various formats which then lets me send HDMI where I want ... Direct to the screen with nothing in between.

It is my understanding that the major audio differences between 1.0 and the next two steps 1.1 and 1.2 is the ability to pass DVD-A and SACD. Since internally decoded hi-def audio is converted to PCM, there shouldn't be any problem passing it to 1.1 and above HDMI to a receiver/pre. One of the main advantages to HDMI over the DVI spec was the bundling of audio in one cable. So if you have HDMI, you're pretty much good to go with almost all the versions unless you want to bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD MA.

When using the 5.1 preouts on the s301 and not the optical is it better to select true hd or pcm5.1 uncompressed?

The S300 can't decode TrueHD nor can it bitstream it so that's a no in any case. Go with PCM for sure.
Even if it could and you were getting all you can from the PCM track then, in theory, it should be identical to the TrueHD track (being that it's a lossless codec) anyways so it would really not matter.

When listening to cd's through the 301 its only 2.0 Is it possible to have 2.1 using the 5.1 outputs?
