If all you're looking for is 'bulletproof', then this one is WAY overkill. I've already forgotten the price, but close to $300 as I recall.

I to am very offended by the nudity in this thread. It didn't even have the choice to pose but I think the women in the TBT did have that choice and right. If you asked them would the say they felt like they were demeaned or useing what they got for a pay check.

Nope, I won't pay over $200 for a cpu. I'm starting with the E6750, people have been able to overclock the heck out of them.

Not even $279 for a quad core that clocks easily to 3ghz x4?
That board looks pretty expensive by itself. Which model is it?

You have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to computers, especially with how fast prices drop.

    Asus Maximus Extreme $349

I don't understand the allure of overclocking something. "Overclocking" means making it run faster than it was designed or speced to run. I personally wouldn't trust my stuff running out of spec, and if I'm gonna drop a couple hundred bucks on something I'm not going to risk damaging it to get a tiny performance increase.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Not when many chips over the years have been under clocked to make it cheaper to produce many "different" chips. I am typically not into OCing, but when you have 4 cores that can be bumped from 2.4 to 3 without breaking a sweat you can't pass it up. There is only like a 5 degree difference when running maxed out, and that never continually happens in real life. Its kinda like doing a sine wave test on an amp at full power.

BTW this is the first chip that I have OCed in a long time. Because of heat issues for a small increase it was not worth it in my opinion. As for a couple of the new Intel's, and my Opteron... well they both have received a little kick with no issues.

Nowadays yields are so good on mature processor steppings ( Ones you guys are actually purchasing today...I worked for Intel for a few years in final test...so this I know ) that almost all of the individual die that are being tested meet the projected maximum speed for that particular stepping.

Where Intel makes its money is in the vast number of lower end cpu's sold to the public....not the small amount of extremely expensive top tier speed cpu's. Even though the vast majority of the cpu's meet the top bin, most are packaged and sold as the lower bin product to supply the much higher demand for much cheaper cpu's.

So most of the so called great overclocking cpu's you see talked about now...really were tested and passed at that speed ( And came off of the same exact wafer ). It gets tricky because Intel got smart and right at the end of production before the die gets wire bonded and packaged it gets multiplier locked ( Except some Extreme Edition high end cpu's and engineering units sent out to writers/testers/media/etc ) and then its labeled and packaged as a slower much cheaper cpu.
The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club

They do lock the multiplier, but you tune down the memory, and bump up the FSB(new Intels handle it no problem), bam you have your mem specs back, and an extra 600mhz x 4.
