I recently purchased a psw1000 subwoofer box with speakers without an amplifier....after talking with polk audio they said the amp that they sell for this box will not work well with the sub and speakers (400 watt bash) Any suggestions on what will work?

Hi dustin. I am a bit confused on what you are trying to do. If I understand your post correctly, you purchased just the subwoofer box with no subwoofer and no amp? Then you purchased your own speaker for the box and are looking for an amp to power it?

Sorry but I'm not following your post...maybe some pictures or something describing what you are trying to do.

So I'm confused, why would the factory amplifier not be good for the box?

customer service said these psw1000 units were recalled. they are actually LSiW,s so they say. They also said they had different impedence drivers......

Ok What impedence do you need for an amp then? 2 ohm? 4 ohm?

Here are some plate amps pretty cheap:

Thats a pretty decent 8 ohm AVR. If the speakers you actually own now are LSi then the impedance is rated at 4 ohms. If you get an amp rated for 4 ohms then you're all set. Most recommend using a 200 Watt amp or better for LSi's, and you will never regret having a kick **** amp rated to 4 ohms over 200 watts.

Do a search on the electronics forum for "LSi amp" and you will find tons of recommendations.

Polk Audio answered your question already...RIGHT?

Did you read the Ebay ad when you got the PSW1000 box? It said you need a plate amp and suggested the Dayton BASH Amp would work well with the woofers in the box. Man you got to read and understand. Here is the hot-link straight to it. Good luck.

Has anyone tried an external power amp to power these? What needs to be fabbed? A cover for plate area and a NL4 or banana socket?

This guy on the west coast is selling these with out amps on eBay and has a lot of people happy for as low as $100 ea. He list for $225. OBO but if you look at feedback a lot sell for $100. Only complaint was one guy got one with only one driver. Dude told him to keep it and sent another. 2subs/3 drivers- what a ****. PSW1000 / LSiW; whatever. Thats a lot of sub for that kind of money.

I know by reading the posts Mathews' fine folks don't want anyone to have anything to do with these. What is the story on these?

I am currently already powering my 1977 era 10's with a Crown pro audio amp and they sound better than my brothers $700 ea. new Polks fresh from the Red BOX store.

an external amp with a crossover should work find so long as you are at the correct impedance for the drivers. You would need to fabricate a plate to cover the gaping hole from the missing plate amp, but it should be fine.

I ordered an original polk 400 watt bash amp and installed it in a sub box purchased from Ebay and it works great dispite what polk customer service tells ya. It retails for 280 with free shipping.
