Why you ask??? Because I did one hugh dumb **** thing...I toasted the left side of the amp. Yeah go ahead & laugh you rotten ****!
I accidentely had the amp positioned where the speaker banana plugs crossed paths. A slight "pop" sound & the left speaker went silent. Not good I tell ya!! The external fuses are ok & I haven't taken a peep inside yet. I called Krell & they said to send it in for a look. Rather than do that I called my good audio dealer Stephen Monte at Quest for Sound. He told me to bring it in on Friday. Not to worry he says, probably a minor fix, hopefully. I just hope it doesn't require too much repair.
So the CJ/Krell preamp head to head will be scheduled for a later date. Laugh on!!!!

I'll see you Friday!
Ya dumb ****!!!! -
Now damn. THAT sucks!
What showdown?~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
I'm surprised the banana plugs weren't welded together with the 1KVA of power that the amp supplied!
-
Sorry to hear that. I dream of accidentaly doing this...scary._________________________________________________

What's the rail voltage of this thing, probably around 90V? I think that comes out to around 10 amps, not much welding power. -
Auuuuuuuuuuugh! The horror!
I hope it isn't too bad."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

Home to LA To get stuff worked on. Going this weekend as a matter a fact.
I feel for you on the mishap. I was once bi-amping my SRS with a pair of M508;'s and blew the right channel out of both of them, 850 bucks later they were all better again. Painful lesson, and a long drive.
Good luck with yours. -
Oh yeah Phil, I forgot to mention, Krell does not advise bananas to touch each other while the amp is on. It is frowned upon.:(
Don't worry, you should be rockin again soon. Keep us posted.
If it makes you feel better, I once blew out the drivers on some B&W's because my preamp was set to Large....only second to when I learned not to change I/C's and speaker cables while in use with my old Onkyo receiver... -
Whenever I have to change interconnects or speaker cables, I wait 10 minutes after turning everything off. This after one time I removed an IC after a couple minutes, and I heard a radio station through the speakers. My fingers in contact with the RCA served as an antenna :eek:
I'm sure there are other ways to discharge those caps....but better safe than sorry._________________________________________________

I've pulled out ICs with the amp still on a couple times, but no real harm seemed to come of it.
Once, I tried to do some LED replacement work on an amp. I must have hooked it up backwards internally, cuz as soon as I turned it on, there was a pop and the breaker in my apt went out.
All I needed to do was flip a switch on my breaker box and get a new fuse for that mishap. . . lucky again.
Sorry to hear you didn't make it out of your mishap unscathed. I'm sure you'll be back up and running soon.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

I would like to state for the record to Phil and everyone that I DID NOT "DICK" THIS AMP! I thought about it....:)

I'm going to take a look inside when I get to Phil's tomorrow. He's a little timid about popping the top!

Ted,
I wanted to pop the top but I don't have any star wrenches. I tried all my allen's but none of them fit.
Joe's bringing his set tomorrow...if he can find them
Then we're headed up to Quest for Sound to show Stephen his record clamp & for him to take a look at the Krell.

Well I just got off the phone with Stephen Monte of Quest for Sound. It looks like I really did a number on the Krell due to my stupidity. Pretty extensive repairs coming my way so the amp won't be ready for another week.
Stephen talked to Krell & he said that he has to get the parts from them, there are no after market replacements. The parts are all Krell items with no chance of getting them except from them.
Bottom line, Stephen's saving me a bundle by him doing the repairs. It's well worth the wait.
Looks like the CJ/Krell preamp shoot out is put off for another week!!!!"2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -
I am offended because you are delaying my chance to win an aftermarket power cord._________________________________________________

That would have never happened with a tube amp...
Actually, I'm pretty surprised the problem is allowed to go unprotected by krell. You should be able to short those without causing damage. Hope it all turns out ok.

my usher r-1.5 amp also has no protection for shorting cable terminals but the connectors on the amp lock in bananas and put a vise grip on spades, maybe it's a sound quality thing.Amplifiers: Norma IPA 140, MasterSound Compact 845, Ayre v6xe, Consonance Cyber 800

You should have your credentials revoked for 6 months. I'm with Ted. If you haven't blown something up in your travels, you're not that hardcore.
I blew up a tube amp while setting bias on the last of 8 tubes. I was told later that I may....MAY have been drinking at the time. Not only did the amp need to be repaired but I had to buy a whole new octet since they were original tubes. Oh well, lesson learned.
I never swap IC's while gear is powered on, ever.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -

Yeppers... Krell worked with Motorola to design and build custom (very fast transient response) output transisitors. Its not a standard item.
