PS3 breakdown!

In the middle of 'Sky High' on Blu-Ray my PS3s disc drive failed. On the bright side, Sony customer service only kept me on the phone for about 3 minutes asking me questions before approving a replacement for me. Usually I have to play phone tag with Customer Support to have anything done that will cost them money. So, good job Sony!

do they offer an advanced exchange program? What's the turnaround? Sucks that your console died already.

They are telling me a 10 day turnaround once they receive my unit. For a mega-company I would not expect advanced exchange (props going out to Outlaw for doing that). Given I won't have any time for my PS3 during family holiday madness it is not a loss for me.... plus I still have a 360 and a Wii if I get desperate ;)

Sorry to hear that man. :(

I have one of the 60GB units which I hope I will never lose to even an 80GB with emulated backwards compatibility let alone the new ones with no BC. Hopefully they will get it back to you promptly.

BUMP. I had the same problem last night. My ps3 croaked in the middle of a new "Live Free, Die Hard" Blu-ray disc. I just got mine in January, and I hate this happened, but I still got the old 360 which hasn't failed me yet so far. (knock on wood) What causes this to happen? My ps3 won't read any discs at all.

It also happened to the 80gb unit that my store had on display. Wouldn't read anything...

The next decision I am faced with is; do I keep the repaired or refurbed ps3, or do I sale it and get a stand alone blu-ray disc player and game on the 360 only?

Were these 80g models?? I have been trying to decide between the 40g and 80g. The only failures I have heard of were with the 80g , everyone I know with the 60g have had flawless performance but they are not making those anymore.

Depends. The PS3 is one of the cheapest most full featured BR players you can get. If you have no need for it concerning games, I'd strap it and get a stand alone. That way all it takes is a trip down to the store to replace it if anything happens.
I should've listened way back in 2008, they told me I'd go broke... they were right

I bought the 40gb and upgraded to 160gb. I use it for a music server, internet, playing games and watching dvds. I havent watched a blueray on it yet.

Same here... FWIW, I bought the 40g one as I don't care to play PS2 games on it and I don't need it to be my music server, or to hold pics. I have the main computer w 460gs and 2g ram.

We have not used the BR many times. I was expecting WOW amazing, but seeing as we watch all our TV shows in 720p a movie was no different. Yes it's good, but I was expecting much much more.

I got a 40g as well, which was all that was available when I got mine. This is a real inconvenience for me. I just purchased 4 blu-ray movies this weekend, and got my 5 freebies on Monday. 9 blu-rays that I can't watch until I get the replacement. When I was on the phone with Sony, they claimed I would get a replacement within 10-14 business days. Not too bad, I just hate this happened NOW. I use mine for movies and games both, but more so on movies. The ps3 is an amazing machine, and hopefully this time around will be better for me.

I buy all my electronics stuff from Costco. They offer a 90 day return on most items. Pretty cool if things break down.

Circuit City is only 30 days. For more money, I could have added a warranty from CC, but when I do, the stuff I buy never breaks down.

I own the 80g version and use it as my Blu ray Player, music server , occasionally a Browser and game machine. I also own the Wii and 360 so gaming can be done anywhere. I perfer gaming on the 360. Not that the ps3 is not good for games but I didn't buy it for that. Thats just a bonus feature it has.

Until everyone rolls out the new Blu Ray players that can Decode or pass everything, I will not own a Stand alone player. Not to mention the time it takes for all of them to load. Ps3 takes 12 seconds to boot up while the next fastest player is the Panasonic 30 and it takes 43 seconds. All others are over 50 seconds before you can put a disc in. that sucks.

lanion, what kind of warranty was on your ps3, was it just the manufacture's warranty? What kind of info did you have to give them over the phone, this might come in handy.

I bought 3 of the 40 gigers for friends a little while back, one of them kicked the bucket a couple of weeks ago ( Wouldnt read discs...any discs ) .

I couldnt have been any happier with Sony's replacement procedure...called em up...they asked a few questions...sent me a shipping box ( Thought that was cool because after raping the UPC's off for the 5 free disc offers the boxes were tossed ) with a return shipping label ( No cost shipping...nice ) ...called UPS and they came and picked up the box at home ( Didnt even have to go to UPS )...then Sony NEXT DAY aired a replacement PS3 back.

If that isnt awesome service, I dont know what is....very impressed.

Sounds like great CS, I just hope I don't have to deal with that. I ended up getting 3 yr ESP on mine, just in case, this is one of the first times I have ever bought an ESP.
