New cabinets for my 10As

Picked up a pair of 10As at the local Goodwill for the rediculous price of $35/pair. The cabinets are in very poor condition but the drivers/crossover seem to be OK. As a perpetual audio experimenter I plan on rebuilding the cabinets and was thinking of an MTM layout with the passive woofer fired sideways. I would maintain the same internal volume, but make the front of the cabinet just wide enough to support the mid/woofers. Looking for suggestions/thoughts on the concept and or layout of the drivers.

I concur. That will totally change the voicing of the speaker. But, it might be a fun project to see what happens especially if you're making them out of MDF or something first to see what they sound like. I would try it in inexpensive form before I went all out on something fancy that doesn't cut the mustard. Who knows...it might work ok.

How bad are the cabs? Why don't you just try to restore them?

I'm curious about the MTM design as well, with a back firing passive. Of course I'd keep the original cabinets. Just use puddy and flexible veneer. I did that some 20+ years ago using flexible Oak veneer. Turned out pretty good. Definitely better looking than the vinyl rosewood.

If you want the MTM design, just make a new pair of speakers. It's a good project. But keep the Monitors; they are classic speakers that can be brought back to life.
