The best and lamest rock band names

The passing of Kevin Dubrow reminded me what a great name for a band “Quiet Riot” was. Then, reading the “Cheesiest Ballads” thread reminded me of some really lame names – could be influenced by the cheese, though.

Sometimes, we can get past a name like “Cinderella” because we like their music, other times we like a name like “Nine Inch Nails” but don’t necessarily like their music. My best list seemed to be names that stuck with me more so than their music. I tried to keep my lists to better-known bands. I like the name “Breaking Benjamin”, but we’ll see if they stick around for a while.

My best list:
1) Big Head Todd and the Monsters
2) Dire Straits
3) Cheap Trick
4) Social Distortion
5) AC/DC
6) Blue Oyster Cult
7) Stone Temple Pilots

Honorable mention:
1) Motley Crue
2) Dead can Dance
3) Quiet Riot
4) Judas Priest
5) Lynard Skynard
6) Goo-goo Dolls

My lamest:
1) Mister Mister (makes me say "huh?")
2) Air Supply (would suck even if they were a metal band)
3) Culture Club (sounds like a club I want to join)
4) The Beatles (it’s my list)
5) Cinderella (liked them, but, 'nuff said)
6) Loverboy (Your kidding me, you named the band Loverboy?)
7) Simply Red (You have red hair so you name the band, this?)
8) Queen (you guys are talented, but you named the band what?)

That’s enough of mine, weigh in with yours.

    Cool idea for a thread.

The coolest name of all time is without a doubt - METAL CHURCH

    After that it would be:

    Testament
    Metallica
    Iron Maiden
    Megadeth
    Dream Theater
    Queensryche
    Fates Warning
    Nightwish
    Twisted Sister

The stupidest name of all time for a band would have to be - SALIVA - I mean seriously, WTF were they thinking?

Next in line for just downright stupid names would have to be:

    Puddle of Mud
    Tool
    Toad the Wet Sprocket
    Bee Gees
    Firehouse
    White Lion
    Seether

These are just off the top of my head so Im sure there are a lot of others out there that are equally ridiculous.

    Great names:

    The Who
    Yes
    Grateful Dead
    13th Floor Elevators
Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band
    Tiny Desk Unit
    Psychedelic Furs
The Cars (although AFAIK they never followed through on their threat to release a greatest hits album called "Used Cars")

    Bad names:
Almost any with umlauts in them ('cept Spinal Tap, of course)

Tool is an awesome name for a band. It's one of the few bands I can think of whose name is symbolic and given more meaning with each album they release.

Tool is the most talented band in existance today, they should not be on any list as they cannot be compared to any other band, especially a bad name list.

Some band names that have stuck with me as unique, but I may not know of thier music:

    Celtic Frost
    King Missile
    Thirsty Herman
    Was (not was)

Tool is a great band with extremely talented musicians especially Dana Carey, a great drummer - but they still named their band after a ****.

And Dream Theater is the most talented band in existence today. :D

The **** interpretation is only one example. Tool for the vag. Tool for the gov. Tool of the mind. Tool of god. Tool of one's own mind. Tool for evil. Tool for good.

Yes and **** means happy - but I still wouldnt name my band "****" unless I was George Michael.

As deep and philosophical as the name may be, the truth remains that 99% of the time when someone uses the word "tool" theyre either referring to someone being a dick, or a crescent wrench. Neither would make a cool band name.

Steely Dan was, of course, named after a marital aid, taken from William Burroughs' book Naked Lunch.

Tool, I would say, is a pretty good band name for a pretty OK band.

Trivia question -- name the two blues performers from whom Pink Floyd took its name.

I wouldn't get too upset. That was coming from someone who still likes Metal Church. :D

As for lame names, Limp Bizkit, Brand New, My Chemical Romance, and Plain White T's are pretty bad.

Outstanding! A fellow headbanger! If you dug them you would probably dig Metal Church. They werent as fast as Anthrax or Slayer but still very heavy. More akin to Metallica's Master of Puppets stuff. Only one guy is from the original band tho, Kurt Vanderhoof on guitars.

Theyve got a Myspace page and it has some of their later music on there. You should check it out, you might dig 'em.

IMO the Beatles is actually a cool name. It was influenced by Buddy Holly and the 'Crickets' whom they all loved. Rock was called 'beat' music back then so spelling it with an 'A' gave it a double meaning. The girls in the Marlon Brando motorcycle movie were also called 'Beetles'.

    Other names I like
    Creedence Clearwater Revival
    Rolling Stones
    The Who
    Led Zeppelin
    Deep Purple
    Velvet Underground
    The Kinks
    The Zombies
    Grateful Dead
    Widespread Panic

One thing we can all agree on - Tool has about the coolest videos ever. Sober is just about my all time favorite.

And what better way to demonstrate DT's unreal skill than with a medley of all their insane instrumentals from over the last 15 years.
