My 8 year old comes home and says he wants a CD from Nickleback. I say WHO? Hey, I'm an old guy. He heard it on the bus on the way to school. The bus driver plays music.
He wants the songs "How You remind me..." , "Hero..." to name a few. Any of you rockers know a good recording with these on it.

How You Remind Me - Silver Side Up
Hero - Spidey man 2 soundtrack

Great band, but they have some content in their lyrics that may not be suitable for an 8 year old. The song 'Never Again' on Silver Side Up talks about spousal abuse and the wife taking the ultimate revenge in the end.

On the other hand, compared to rap music and Grand Theft Auto type video games, they would be considered very mild.

All the Nickleback releases I've heard are recorded hot though. Catchy pop hooks.

Nickleback is boss for it's genre. If you are listening to it, you aren't listening for subtle nuances and image. It's rock. It's recorded hot (loud), and does exactly what it should do.

I've got all the cd's, and will probably buy the next one.

    Cheers,

I listened to the "Hero' song and didn't anything that bad in it. But perhaps I should re-think this one. Defusing again.

I have pretty strong opinions when it comes to overplayed music myself, but Nickelback is a pretty cool group. Yeah, their songs are overplayed and their music is somewhat homogenous but they are cool guys. They are from my neck of the woods and have sold and set-up HT systems and partied with these guys and their parents (when they were playing for the Juno awards).

I always thought most Nickelback songs sounded kinda the same, but this song rocks. They definitely have a few good rockin' songs.

Saw them in concert (opening for another band) and after EVERY song the lead singer would say...

"Thank you! Thank you very much!"

    Cracked me up :)

They did cover Metallica's "Seek and Destroy".

Overall its decent stuff..the ladies seem to like them a lot.

I am not a mainstream listener at all, but I have to admit that Nickleback is a good top 40 band.Just like everyone else said they are catchy tunes to sell records. Thats what they do.

I'd rather drink a gallon of bleach than sit through yet another new Nickleback song.

I swear, those assclowns record a new track every 15 seconds.

    Decent band

Even though they are played often, it is refreshing to hear them on the radio as I can't stand the saturation of hip-hop everywhere....

    Here's my Nickelback story:

I teach high school, and one of my "side jobs" I do there is the announcing for the varsity baseball team. This job has two parts: Announcing the lineups and batters as they come up, and I play music over the PA in between innings.

A couple seasons ago, one of the players finds me before the game and presents me with a burned CD that he made of songs the team would like to hear during pregame warmups and between innings.

"All the lyrics appropriate on this?" I asked him.

    "Yeah."

    "You sure?"

    "Uh-huh."

So, I import this CD into my laptop, since I use iTunes to make playlists for baseball. I have no idea what songs are on this disc, and so I'm playing them blindly--In between innings, I cue up the next song, and these lyrics come blaring out of the PA system:

I like your pants around your feet
I like the dirt that's on your knees
I like the way you still say please
while your looking up at me
you're like my favorite damn disease

I look at the scoreboard operator who's in the booth with me, and both of our mouths just dropped open--I'm not sure if all those lyrics got out before I FF'd to the next song, but at least the first couple lines were heard by all in attendance!

That song is Nickelback's "Figured You Out," and it's not the worst song ever recorded, but not exactly appropriate for a sancitoned high school function of any kind!

We still laugh about that one--fortunately no one complained to the athletic director about it.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to squeeze one more smile out of that story. You may want to exclude that song from your son's playlist for several years, though!

Figured you out is definately not the song for an 8yr old to be listening too. The song does not use profanity but its pretty blunt visual language no beating around the bush.
Nowadays i wont compare anything to todays hiphop/rap music that is no standard to go by. Unless you in the garbage business.

I like the freckles on your chest
And I like the way you like me best
And I like the way you're not impressed
While you put me to the test
I like the white stains on your dress(..............hmmm)

And I love the way you pass the cheque
And I love the good times that you wreck
And I love your lack of self-respect
While you passed out on the deck
I love my hands around your neck (..............hmmm)

I might encourage you to let you son listen to some Mozart, rachminoff or bach. :) maybe a waltz or two Johan strauss........that brings back found memories of my childhood

Definately not something you want an 8 year old to hear. Practically every lyric in 'I want to be a rock star' has something blanked out in it.

That puts it best! But the stuff kids are listening to today, and in general exposed to whether online or by the PS3 no wonder so many of them are all messed up and confused?
