Would a bad tube cause a buzz?

Please say so...

If not, I may throw my entire stereo out in the yard....

I turn off my Candela - the buzz goes away...

I tap on the faceplate/top I hear a static as I knock from the speakers...

Tell me I have a bad tube...

Something...so I can go back to sleep

Yes, a bad tube can buzz and react to tapping on the faceplate. When I had tube gear, I made it a habit to have at least three spares for almost every tube in the system.

Ya think that may be why I'm broke?

how's that gotee coming for you there Trey???

the tube is the most likely culprit, certainly sounds like at least one is microphonic. Sometimes the piece can start off quiet then get noisy as the tube heats up.

All tubes are microphonic, some just more than others.

    Ok...

    So I changed the tubes...

    And it actually got worse....

    Odd --

    Go from there ---

    Totally disconnect the pre...

Attach the CDP directly to the amp...

When a CD is NOT playing -- it is kind of quiet, a very slight static...

When a CD is playing, all hell breaks loose...

I'm starting to point fingers at the Mono Blocks...

    Update 1-

    Disconnected the CDP...

    Connected it directly to TV

Slight static (I would give it on a loudness scale a 3 out of 10)

And when the CDP is plugged up only - cd playing, a 10...

From there --- if everything is hooked up normally, no CD playing -- and even on a different source, I will have to say its on a scale of 5....

    Nothing makes sense right now

Tube CD player............I would check the tube sockets in it. I know you don't use that output, but it doens't turn them off.

    Update 2 -

Connected preamp to amps -- no CDP in chain

    Noise continues

CDP is dismissed from possible causes...

    Amps remain the probable problem...

Is not a power related noise

Bought power conditioner today -- problem persists...

Run the TV directly into the amps if you can contol the volume of TV. This tests just the amps.

    I did ---

    Hard to tell exactly...

If I muted the sound -- I heard a slight static... not to the extent I am hearing it now....

Its hard to tell if there is static going on when the TV sound is on...

I don't think its the preamp -- reason being when I plugged the CDP up, it basically went to hell...

I dont know - trying to call Klaus, no answer

Is it both channels? I doubt both amps go bad at the same time.

Right channel is WORSE than the left channel...

The right channel has a higher volume of static and is more intermitent - as in its a variation of static - not a continuous static....

The left channel is a constant static at a lower volume

Nothing really makes much sense right now

Bad signal or power somewhere. Both amps won't crap out together. Check all cabling.

I swapped the left and right outputs on the preamp ---

There is still a slight static in the left speaker and a much louder static in the right...

    - but it no longer an intermintent static... hmmm --

    Weird....

Sounds like the amp powering the right channel is blah

And the amp powering the left channel still has static -- but not near as much... not sure - not sure not sure

One thing to point out -

This static does NOT increase when you increase the volume

Its a constant static no matter what...

Try the preamp into your Crown into your Taylos.

    Trey,

Try to run the TV's audio out directly into the amps again.

    TV -> Amps -> Taylos

Then switch the left/right monoblocks and see if the problem persists on the same amp.

I know you did this before but try it again just to be sure.

That basically says it's the monoblocks.

However, like I said, try the TV's audio out into the monos again. Sometimes weird things just creep up...

Oh yeah, if possible, connect your CDP to one of the "Audio/Video In" inputs on the TV. What happens then?

    Trey,

It's nearly impossible for TWO amps to go out at the same time. Literally. If it were just one monoblock, yes, possible, but TWO?
