For love of Gawd don't use Jeep and Compass in the same sentence! Does the Term P.o.S. mean anything to ya? There's no comparison because the Compass hasn't been out long enough to compare to anything. Basically an untested mass-market steaming pile brought to you idiots at Daimler-Chrysler.
Patriot, Liberty, Compass...none of these deserve the Jeep badge.

Amen! My sentiments exactly! Those new 'Jeeps' are TOTALLY out of line with Jeep's heritage.

Interesting. The dealer we went to a while ago said that the Compass can go off-road. The salesman even went on to explain the 4X4 system in the Compass and how you can "lock" the transmission into 4WD mode.

Guess it's not as off-road capable as the older Jeeps then.

Let me repeat what everone has said. The Compass is not a "Jeep" if you're looking at anything but the name. It's a compact car based on a platform also used by Dodge, and I just realized it's also the one Mitsubishi uses for several of their small cars. I'd expect the reliability to be a good deal below traditional Honda, Toyota, and Subaru levels. Seriously, if you're looking for a car you don't want a Jeep, and if you're looking for a Jeep you don't want a Compass.

You can take a Compass off-road in the technical sense, much like you can take any other car off-road. The AWD system used in the Compass is mainly for pavement use. In addition, and I hate to use their silly BS marketing term, the Compass and most Patriot trims are the only Jeep models without the "Trail Rating."

As far as the Liberty goes, in the past when the WJ, TJ, and XJ(replaced by the Liberty) were the other models in the lineup it was a bad choice. However, considering that only one Jeep model left has SFA the Libby is on par with the other non-Wranglers. I think the new one that shares the Dodge Nitro platform is pretty hideous, though.

My own personal Jeep off-road ability ratings, stock configuration, highest to lowest:

1a. Late CJ, YJ, TJ, LJ, JK
    1b. MB, early CJ

    2a. SJ, J-series, M715, etc
2b. ZJ, XJ, WJ, C10x, MJ

    3. JK, KK, WK, XK

    4. VJ, DJ,

    5. MK

    Again, thanks for the explanation.

So something like Grand Cherokee WK would be a better choice for mostly city/some off-road driving, I guess.

I guess the salesman was also exaggerating about the Compass' abilities.

What exactly are you looking for? How much off-road driving are we talking about? A Grand will get very poor gas milage as a city vehicle, especially with any of the better engines. Although they're pretty comfortable to be stuck in traffic in.

Well, I'm not looking for a car, but my dad is. Basically something that will be good for going around the city and occasional camping. Also have a few friends that live in pretty rural areas where there is no paved road, mud, snow, etc.

    Forgot to mention -

When I said "off-road" I meant light off-roading, nothing too serious, our Nissan Maxima handles it fine.

That's not off roading. Sounds like you could by a used Chevy Lumina, slam it, slap 20's on it and still be just fine.

It'd be ridiculous to put up with the poorer gas mileage and lesser comforts of a off-road capable Jeep just to disgrace its heritage by driving it on a dirt path.

Jeep's heritage is already past redemption so I wouldn't worry about that, but a heavy truck is serious overkill for terrain that a Maxima can 'wheel. How about a Rav4 or Forrester?

RIGHT ON BROTHER!! I only have one point of difference. The Rubicon is the most capable Jeep out of the show room. But mainly because of the 4:1 low and e-lock lockers. I'm in a 4x4 club here in Houston with about 90 members and we have lots of Rubis in our crowd. I've seen them do amazing stuff with PAPER PLATES. (Some guys buy them on Friday and wheel Saturday!!)

For what it sounds like, you really don't want a Jeep, but rather just something with AWD maybe??? I dunno.

I guess you guys are right. Something that has AWD will do fine, I guess a Jeep is overkill.

Rav4/Forrester? What else would you recommend?

If by speed limit you mean the POSTED speed limit, and not the commonly accepted 5 - 7 over, no way.

    Actually, even if you'd allow for 5 - 7 over...365 days....ha, still nope. I'll just hafta search youtube. :(

I didn't even have to search youtube. You posted in Lasareath's page.

As per the speed limit, it's not that hard to observe the posted speed limit. I've been going 53-55 most of the time and no more than 55.
