Not surprised if our gas prices go past $4.00 sometime in the near future.

I think the highest I've ever seen in NYC was $3.89 or $3.99 or something like that... may be up to $4.20+ soon!

Only a matter of time before our gas prices go up too...

If you actually own and drive a car in NYC, you're either filthy rich or not very bright, so gas prices shouldn't much matter to you.

Still hovering around 2.79 / 2.89 around here, though from the looks of this thread I expect it to go up soon... blech.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I can't believe The big 3 car makers misread reality again.
After the Japanese took them to school in the 70s and the 80s.
All major Japanese makers have a top selling hybrid car (well .. toy, but u know what I mean..) ,
    and the Americans? oh brother.
I fear the day when a mass market U.S car becomes as rear as a mass market U.S TV,
    is closer then ever.
I'm not after digging up the tired old "Prius: a bluff or a planet-saver" debate,
I'm just saying the sells graphs are what they are.

Good point. With gas prices rising close to $4.00 a gallon (and maybe past that), I think small fuel-efficient cars will be the way of the future.

You say that, but the only things American carmakers have been able to successfully sell over the last decade have been SUVs, trucks and big engine sports cars. I can't say I blame them for not jumping on the Green bandwagon sooner. But seriously, look at what's successful. F150s, the Charger, the Mustang. Chrylser, until recently, was doing the best out of the American companies and they have the worst fuel economy of anyone.

The Prius is not doing so bad also you know..
I can't see big V8s doing well in the next decades. when the price hits 15$/gallon.
the next breed of hybrids is going to double current generation's millage.
For an average Joe it will be the difference between spending 900$ a month on fuel, and spending 200$.
that's SDA money every 3 months :D you do the math ;)

This is all very sad for me personally, as I am a big fan of 70s muscle cars.

    carpenter wrote:

The Prius isn't American. I completely agree with everything you said, I'm just saying you can't really blame the American car companies for not jumping on the fuel-efficiency bandwagon, because their fuel-efficient cars don't sell nearly as well as their gas-guzzlers. People buy Japan's fuel-efficient cars, American car companies just have a hard time selling them. Whether it's just an image thing or a quality thing I can't say.

No this business model will not last very long with gas prices where they're going, but as long as folks are still coming in droves to buy pickups, Detroit's not going to panic about fuel-efficiency quite yet.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
