I bought Dish for my mother who only wanted basic plus at $19. Even though I was locked in a contract for 2 years, they've increased the price steadily. Now, at 25 months, I'm paying $50 for BASIC PLUS!!! Before the 24 months was up, I was paying $40.

    Switching to DTV soon.

I agree with KEX that somethings wrong here. BUT, having said that I believe you've hit upon one of the industry's problems (Satellite, Cable, Phones). The "promises" are long and the "delivery" is short. Most of Dish's offers imply "qualifying programming" which usually means the Top100 pack or higher ($30) for 18 months. Throw in Locals ($5), Home Protection Plan ($6), and any extra receivers ($5 each). Now complicate it even more. Throw in HD and get HBO + Cinemax free for 3 months. Don't forget to cancel becaue they will not remind you, and don't forget the freebies are for 3 and/or 6 months and the contract is for 18. Try and find anything of this in ONE SINGLE location on their website. I know I'm singling out Dish but believe me Direct, Cox, and AT&T aren't any better.

I will use their websites for basic research but always order by phone. I start by asking them exactly what the fixed and ongoing costs are. Tell me what the TOTAL costs are for 18 months if that's what the contract is for. Then divide by 18 to get your average monthly costs for comparison with others.

It truly is a jungle out there.

Dish is the king of bait and switch. This is an incredibly dishonest company and without the VIP622 they would be inferior in every way. My monthly bill has gone from $109 to $139 without adding anymore channels.

    They suck.

Was going to order Dish Network but ran away real fast after I did one of those chat sessions online with a rep. The guy was trying to tell me there was an extra $10 month rebate on the dvr package to make it $29/mnth. When asked to prove this was in fact true, he was quick to ignore me and proceeded to ask when I would be signing up. Well, I called the 800 number and in fact, there was no such rebate.

That doesn't sound right. We started out with some special deal for six months or something, including Starz and HBO (for three months, I think), then reverted to the normal price of $29.99 for the America's Top 100 package. After fees and taxes that ends up as $35.40 per month. It has never changed since. Did you forget to cancel the Home Protection Plan (DHPP I think) which is about $5.00? It's free for one year I think. It shows up as a charge and also a credit on the bill, but then if you don't cancel you end up paying for it.

I would check your bill and see what you're actually paying for.

Yep. It's in there. Their billing makes zippo sense. Here's the breakdown (tax not included).

DIGITAL HOME ADVANTAGE WITH AMERICA'S TOP 100 AND 34.99
DISH HOME PROTECTION PLAN (DHPP) 5.99
    LOCAL 0.00
    PROGRAMMING ACCESS FEE 5.00

    Account Charges $ 45.98
    Total $ 45.98
