Texas Gathering thoughts, follow up

First of all, I would like to thank Aaron and his better half Lisa for putting up with my silly ****, and letting me invade their humble abode.

Second, a big thanks to Micah for the 'goodies' he sent for us to enjoy. A XL Black, logoed Polk Tshirt, some Polk Momo stickers, a Polk Audio badge holder, copies of the Speaker Specialist and current catalog, and an Audioquest Binding Post Wrench for everyone.

I'm gathering my thoughts today for reviews on the LSi, and will post those later. A good time seemed to be had by all. We were able to listen to a variety of Polks from past and present, on a variety of gear. What I hoped to gain from this meet, was a thorough demo of the LSi series (musically), and compare them to the SDA's of past. I'll have some interesting notes on this comparison later today.

We also played with speaker placment, which proved to make definate tonal changes in the LSi's. Some of us liked the changes, some did not. I think everyone kept an un-biased and open mind, and for the post part we had similar musical tastes, and similar likes, and dislikes. It is always fun to hear other members 'demo' material, and the tracks they are familiar with, what they are listening for. I've got some new music to track down now.

I will say one thing, the LSi9 was VERY, VERY impressive. It held similar characteristics as the 15's, but I felt the mid-range was clearer, and the bass was more controlled. Not detracting from the 15's mind you, as I said, reviews will follow.

The LSi series is without a doubt the FLATTEST Polk speaker I have ever heard. It might actually be TOO flat for some. I discussed this at length with Aaron, and he actually runs them with both the treble and bass slightly emphasized (which works out quite well for his music selections).

First things first, I have a man-cave to re-assemble, so for now, like a fat girl in a dodgeball game, I'm out.

    The comments are much appreciated Russman. Thank you for coming down here, for bringing everything that you brought, and for fielding all of my questions throughout your stay. You are a good man indeed, and as sharp as a tack. heheh

    My primary goal with this was to bring forum members together to meet in person, learn some, demo speakers and gear, and to have some fun. Even though a few were missed (trappedunderice where are ya man? doin ok?) it was a complete success.

    Thanks to Micah for the goodies! I think the Polk Audio T-shirt is going to be my new concert shirt. The two upcoming Tool concerts should break it in quite nicely and catch some looks.

    I'll post my opinions of the RT7 and SDA CRS soon. I think the LSi was deffinately the leader this weekend though. Russman did Steve play his Bjork Vaspertine DVD-A for you? That was what blew my away the first time I heard the 9's.

    It was a lot of fun, and I recommend that other people do the same if you can. We will most likely do this again on a little bigger scale here in Texas next spring/summer. So keep an eye out. We need some RTi150s next time!@#$%&

    Oh yeah. I think Russman has found a new interest. Be on the lookout - you might see him in a black latex bodysuit with black eyeliner on flailing his arms about spasticly to industrial music. :lol:

    Ok, I gotta know. Who is and why are they wearing that single sock on their right arm? Was there a Polk Audio puppet show going on? Or is that a subtle 'Micah sock' joke? Inquiring minds wanna know.

    Thats me. Subtle Micah joke... that didn't work out as well as I had thought it would.

    The socks on the floor was a better idea though....

    Bjork has incredible vocal talent. That voice is one in a million, period, like her or not.

    Bjork made me bite, however Sade realed me in. Steve's lucky I just didn't start wackin' it right there in his living room.

    I hope I didn't insult him, and he took it as a complement to his system, but I kept looking around his well laid out, yet intimate room, for a sub. There is NO-WAY the LSi9 has this kind of low-end output. It's either true, or Steve is the Houdini of audio.

    I was stone-cold-sober, and kept asking him OVER and OVER, ARE YOU SURE you aren't using any 'loudness' or 'bass contouring controls'. Sure enough the Arcam was set as FLAT as Gwen Stefani.

    Simply effin amazing, I'm tellin' ya....

    I am sure glad Russ didn't start whackin' it in my apartment. Whew.

    I don't have a subwoofer, nada, none. It's just a matter of setup, position, and room acoustics. I don't have a lot of reflective surfaces in the room, and have the speaker spaced to get a great soundstage.

    I can be hired out :)

    Steve, give us some detail as to how you got that bass response. Share some knowledge of what you know about setup, position, room acoustics etc. Sounds like your setup was supreme.

    And you will prolly see that very pic in the newspaper. It's just that funny. I hope that your good experiences inspire others to have their own regional get-togethers. I will always do my best to make sure Polk supports this kind of thing.

    Not only do I have a sock on my hand, but the paper that steve and I are "readin" is upside down.

    For some reason I think Micah is gonna slam us pretty hard as a payback....

    Well, I don't have a lot of reflective surfaces (aka, glass tables, pictures, etc) so that helps.Also, I have a lot of fabric, being cloth couches, carpet, etc. that help deaden up the room.

    As far as speaker placement, they are enough from the wall to not make it boomy, but close enough to allow the wall to help the bass response. Toe'ing in the speakers helped with placement of sounds and everything as well.

    I think it's just a matter of picking a track, playing it, adjusting, playing again, adjusting, again and again.

    The only cables that were in effect on the DVD and the CD Audio were the Monster Cable digital coax cable and the JPW Bi-Wired speaker cable. In the case of the DVD-A, it was Monster 400mkII.

    I'd really like to get some upgraded interconnects and speaker wire, but that's when I get a job ;)

    The 15s sounded like they had a TON of potential, but when they are positioned that close to each other, I think they are being somewhat hidden. A great test for those would be to take and set them up where we had all the other speakers, as far apart as possible, toe them in a little, and move a couch in front of them. Have them about 10" from the wall, (about what I have mine, but you have those 8" drivers, so I dunno) and sit about like 6 feet from them.

    Might be a weekend little project for ya Aaron ;)

    Pffffft. I think they sound fine right now. :)

    I'm limited a little in this apartment. Im happy with the way it sounds now, so I'll leave em as they are till I get a house or a place that is layed out better.

    It's not that I didn't like anything, I thought they sounded great. But at the same time, with them positioned "over there" I think they could sound better :)
