That is the point, the new 40 gig model will not play any of them, and the current 80 will play some, but not all of them.

Demi,
I gave my point of view and you gave yours. For you playing PS2 games isn't that important, for me it is. I have seen the upconversion and it wasn't huge but in some games it was a nice increase (I borrowed a PS3). I don't want to play all of the older games that I have, but I have a lot of PS2 games I am very fond of.
I don't have a PS3 because for me it has no games. There are only 2 games which I would buy for the PS3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Resistance. Those will not last that long and if I couldn't play my PS2 games it would be pointless for me to own now.
I guess the point is that some people are very fond of their PS2 games and no matter what comes down the pike they still want the ability to play them. Backwards compatibility was always a big thing for me, and was always the big thing PS3 had over 360 (360 is b/c but limited)
I agree, I still play PS1 games sometimes. The Ps3, while technically superior, has no games yet. When it does, I may pick one up, but will still play my old games. They are still fun even without 1080... -
I would say so. That just broke the deal for me. Plus, wasn't it a Sony exec. who said it's illegal to store music on your computer?
Probably, I got hooked up with the rootkit from one of their CDs. When I tried to just rip the CD instead of using their lousy software, it inserted all kinds of jitter and static.

Vman we are on the same wavelength as usual. I still have some PS1 games I would like to play but my PS2 stopped playing them (along with some older PS2 games) a couple years ago. Apparently the 40gb is b/c with PS1 games but not PS2...weird.
I'm worried about what happens 5 years down the road when you can't get a PS2 anymore hopefully by that point the PS3 will be b/c and be <$200. I still have some N64 games that I kept hoping that the new Nintendo system will play them...bright idea there. -
Waht really sucks is that I still have my PS2 from when it first came out and it wont play half of the PS2 games out thereTesting

Older games or is it random? I can't get mine to play older games like Ico or Halflife. I still haven't played halflife, my computer would lock up at a certain part playing it and my PS2 stopped playing it around half way through.Polkmaniac wrote: »I don't own any PS2 games, so i don't know if mine works or not. Should play them just fine. You really should pick up some PS2 games, can probably get them real cheap. -

60GB includes all the hardware for the ps2 inside the box. It should be the most backwards compatible of all the versions you can get now. The 80GB does software emulation and still contains like one ps2 chip. It plays most ps2 games with more added via firmware updates.
The 40GB doesn't even come out until next month. That's the one everyone is talking about not being able to play ps2 games. It's $399 and it's a shame they couldn't have just kept some compatibility in there instead of confusing the issue like in this thread. -

Right again J. I have 2 PS2's, The big one and the slim one. My big one's opticle out died, but everything else works fine. If my memory serves me correctly; I think the cest selling console on the market is still the PS2. I wonder if that is why Sony is handicapping the PS3?
