Any way of finding out what frequency that is? I can hear it perfectly fine at 30.

Kids use that for a ringtone on their cell phones in school (I hear) because most of the teachers can't hear it. My best friends 17 year old son told me that. I couldn't hear it when his phone was ringing...neither could my buddy.

I can hear it just fine and I'm 30.

This "news" "broke" about this time last year.

The problem is that while the actual pure tone may not be audible to people with a certain level of hearing loss due to age, abuse, whatever, the harmonics introduced by the playback and compression of the actual sine wave are what is audible. It could be argued that some of the younger kids can't hear it either after beating the hell out of their ears drums with iPods and such.

35 here, and it was painful. The dog didn't care much for it either.

Turns out the 17Khz mosquito ring tone might be a little dirty from being converted to mp3 thus allowing us 30+ folks to hear it more easily. Here's an interesting blog about it. Below are some cleaner tones to try out. The author recommends not turning the volume way up despite the fact that they are nearly inaudible because it's still pretty intense sound.

I can hardly hear the 3rd one... can't hear the last one at all.

That ring tone must be lower than 17k, I can only hear the first one of your links but can hear the ring tone.

Neat, first one clear as a bell. Second one about half as loud. Third almost non existent, Fourth - nothing, nada, zip.

Tried it again. With the volume cranked, I could hear the first two fine, but barely heard the third one. It was funny seeing the meters jump on my amp but barely hearing any noise.

I'm 37. I can hear the MP3 clear as day. In the wav files that were linked, I could hear up to the 16961 Hz pretty easily. The last one was lost though. Probably wouldn't hear that under normal conditions.

Clicking the 'Listen' button on the NPR page, I couldn't hear a thing when she said "tones like this". However, I could hear the mp3 ringtone just fine.

I can hear all four of the .wav files through my headphones. I went through them all and could hear them just fine, so then I thought I'd try it with the volume lower. I played the first one, and turned down the volume so it was just audible, and at that volume I could hear the first three. However, I can't hear the fourth one below 1/4 volume, but can above that.

None of them are that annoying to me.

Oh, and I'm 22 days away from my 20th birthday.

I find students having to have their damn cellphones always ringing annoying.
Maybe if they had them surgically implanted. I could even suggest where to have them installed. The only distraction I ever had in school were those really short mini skirts.

I could hear those first three pretty clearly- the last one less distinctly. And I'm 38 as of last Thursday.

Another variable is your computer speakers: Most of the cheaper ones are well into their roll-off by 15khz.

I heard them all and the last one was the loudest. I'm 52.

The ring tone in post 1, neither my wife 43, my dog 6, my son 10 nor I could hear it.
