...for the Bruce Springsteen concert in Columbia SC on Dec 9th. Came in the mail yesterday. Man, I been waiting to seem him since I was an even younger wiseass than I am now. It's the one concert that has eluded me all these years.
I've been playing 'Born to Run' all afternoon which I would argure despite the quality of the recording is still one of the greatest rock albums of all time, definately in the top 5 as far as I'm concerned.....

Cool!
Did you get good seats? -
Yeah, we did, actually. Due to the lovely Wendi's condition, we always get handicapped accessible seating. We are on the platform in the handicap section that is beside the stage.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Troy,
Get ready for a great show. Saw Born in the USA tour in Denver. He is a great entertainer and his band is one of the best. Do you know if Clarence is with him on this one?
Paul -
Paul, yes, the whole E-Street band is going to be there......can't wait, amigo.

Suppose you could sneak me in with you? Maybe stuff me in a gym bag or something?

BDT-I hope you and the lovely Wendi enjoy the show!
I myself cannot wait for Rush at MSG and then the Continental arena, counting the days - haven't missed a Rush tour since '77
Agree w/you on "Born To Run" THE definition of "Epic" song is Jungleland - that, and Meeting Across The River gives me "chickenskin" every time
CHEERS ! jefffArt as expression-Not as market campaigns-Will still capture our imaginations. -
If you are not a fan of the new album (CD), and this is your first Springsteen show, you might be disappointed.
I work P/T as a security guard at Continental Airlines Area and have been a Springsteen fan since '75. When he opened this tour at CAA he played almost the ENTIRE new album (The Rising) and very little of his back catalog, maybe 10-12 tunes.
When he did the 1999-2000 tour (15 shows at CAA) he had a core 18 songs that stayed the same and switched off on about 6 a night (22-24 songs total a night).
Don't expect "Jersey Girl", "Rosalita" or any obscure songs familiar to many long time Springsteen fans.
Show averaged about 2 hours, not the 3-plus hours show he used to do back in the day, but after all he is 50 years old.Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support
group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

Hmmmm...........
I've heard some of the stuff off of his new album and I like it. Very Nebraska-ish in character (his most underrated album). I'm going to go out and say that there isn't much Springsteen stuff out there that I DON'T like.
Personally, I think that 'Jungleland' is THE quintessential rock song. It has it all. I also think that Springsteen is one of the most prolific songwriters in rock history.
I'll be sure to give you a rundown on the concert, I'm stoked. I hope that he plays a lot of old stuff from Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River. He's got 30 years worth of stellar material though so something is bound to get left out.

You hit the nail on the head. Those three albums are where the bulk of the extra material came from. I don't have the set list with me at work, however, if I remember correctly he opened the show with 'The Rising' from 'The Rising'. He also played 'Prove It All Night', 'Badlands', and 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' from 'Darkness', 'Born To Run' and 'Thunder Road' from 'Born To Run' and 'Two Hearts' from "The River". He performed 'American Skin (41 Shots)' to very mixed reviews. The other thing that I noticed is that he introduced the band to 'Mary's Place' from 'The Rising' instead of '10th Avenue Freezeout' like he usually does.
If I still have it at home and I remember, I'll try to post the set list from the tour opener at CAA.
He is truly an excellent performer and if you are a die-hard fan like I am, you should really enjoy the show.Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support

age has nothing to do with it..Im 45 and dont think Bruce is the BOSS..his stuff is ok as I mentioned in my previous post but I would not place him anywhere near the top 5 of all things rock -
Billm57,
Just curious. Who would you consider your top five picks concerning rock performers? And would you distinguish between British/American? Are Springsteen's sensibilities as a writer closer to contemporary American Folk than to Rock? Please limit your essay to 500 words or less. (Sorry, my wife is a teacher)

.as far as Springsteen is concerned his early songwriting was more folk than rock then he became more pop in my eyes...
p.s. why are you trying to write this like your wife????? -
Well, let's scratch the top five list. I guess the question would need to be more specific. For me I look at American and British music differently. My last comment was vague. After looking at it my question sounded like a classroom assingment to write an essay.
In light of Troy's upcoming concert event, I guess I'm reaching for some comments on not only Springsteen's music, but the music industry in general. I am of the opinion that the music industry in this country is more concerned with packaging and pigeonholing groups and singers than in the music itself. In other words, what category does this music fall into. Rock, Country, Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, or any of the other subcategories. If a certain performer or band cannot be packaged in one of these categories, they have little chance of being succesful.
Back to Springsteen. In the beginning he was packaged as the next Bob Dylan. A legacy, I think, he has spent a long time trying to live down. I don't think his music is that much like Dylan's and certainly he has changed somewhat over the years, probably because the industry demands it. With that said, I don't think Springsteen fits easily into the Rock category. Certainly the E Street Band Rocks. Their concerts are truly an event to remember, but if you look closely at the music, you will find that it is more about the lyrics than the music itself.
Springsteens lyrics are about American life. They paint a picture of what the American experience is about. There is a reason he wrote The Ghost of Tom Joad, a direct reference to John Steinbeck. Springsteen's music and Steinbeck's storys share a common trait of bringing life to common characters and giving the reader the sense that they have some relationship to the characters. At a Springsteen concert you will be taken by the audience engagement that Bruce inspires. Fans know every word to every song.
Take for example the song Thunder Road:
The screendoor slams, Mary's dress waves,
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays.
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely,
yeah that's me and I want you only.
Listen for the imagery that is created here. You have sound calling from within the lyrics and a picture of youth. The longing to not be alone.
The promise of freedom:
Oh, oh come take my hand
we're riding out tonight to
chase the promised land.
You can read a lot into this, but the meaning is very clear. Not bad for a guy who started a band so he could meet chicks.
I don't really see Springsteen as a Rock act. I would place him more with the likes of Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash and John Prine. -
i agree..I dont think he really fits into rock either thus my comments..he is commercial pop now in my eye...as far as who fits into what category of music anymore..thats all opinon really

Yes, it is a free download although you can purchase a premium registration which allows you to disable the ads & includes high resolution cover scans for $25.00 (I think). I use the free version and have been for about 2 years.

I think today is around day 115 or so....to be honest I really don't count. I count paydays to mark time...
I'll be back by then, I should be back around the first week in July. Actually, they have waived the 180 day rule, otherwise I wouldn't mind as much staying to the 180 day mark to get another short tour credit.
I'm definately looking forward to the show...
