Hey all,
Im looking to build a friend a HT setup on the cheap. I will probably use hte R300 and R150's from frys for the mains since they are on crazy sale. But i need a sub. Id like to keep it around $150. So far i have heard of the Velo VX-10 and Athena ps-4000 something. Any other ideas for such a low price ? Thanks!

trick question?
lol, just teasing.
the only and i mean ONLY sub i've ever heard that is even remotely worth spending that much (or little, depending on monetary situation) would be any sony 12'' ported subwoofer designed for home entertainment. While not that accurate, they sure do put out some power (for a measly 120 bucks, therearound)
that's the only thing i know of that may be remotely in your price range worth spending that kind of money on..AND you will want to upgrade after that too, so might as well just save some money on a decent sub.
maybe a car oriented sub?? it would be a good experiment, ive been looking at doing the same thing, just to see...At Home:

My parents have the Athena, it does a decent job. NOw I have ot done testing with it , but from what I have been able to tell it does the job, what more can you ask for in that price range.

I don't think I have ever seen a Sony sub recommendation before..:p
.but then again I have not heard one either. I would kick my budget up a notch and get a used something else. The sub is a pretty important HT element so you don't want to go too cheap.

I have a DefTech ProSub 80 in my bedroom. I think used ones go for around $200 or so. I would check your local Craigslist for used DefTech subs. They may not be the end-all be-all musically, but even this little 8" BUMPS. It goes low, hits hard, and is extremely impressive for its size and price.
This is due to its 250 watt amp, I supposed.
Go used. $150 - $200 won't get you anything worthwhile that's new. Hell, even the PSW10 has a sticker of $200, although Polk wisely decided to just start giving them away. Comparing the new PSW10 to my used DefTech ProSub 80 isn't even funny/fair.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

I don't have any specific recommendations for subwoofers, but I would second the vote to go used instead of buying new. I recently purchased a used subwoofer and couldn't be happier with it. With the money you save by going used, you can get a whole lot more bang for your buck.My HT

I've heard a lot of recommendations for the Velodyne VX10 for $150 at Fry's. I have also heard many recommendations for the x-sub recommended above also http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=12.1. And that Yamaha certainly seems like a viable option from the reviews, but at 45w it might be the "baby" of the bunch.
The next step up new might be the Acoustech H100. Offer $200 "buy it now" on e-Bay and they'll accept (not $195) with $39 shipping and no sales tax. Let me know if you need help to find the seller's store (there should be one based in NV and another based in CA). This thing can really rock the house for $240.Alea jacta est! -
I listened to the Velo VX10. I was not that impressed. It was decent, but it was sounded somewhat bloated. If you can find the old version (not the current version) of the Parts Express 10" nick-named "tiny mighty", it's pretty good for the $. I have one and used it for my bedroom HT. I believe it was $200 new, but you can find it used for around $100, once in a while, on HT Forum.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was able to convince my friend to spend a little more and i found a SVS PC local for $350. Good deal id say!

sounds like a good deal on the SVS.
To anyone else reading this for advice on a budget sub - stay away from the vx10 - at any price.
If you can an older model CHT series on closeout, that's the option I would take for two bills. -
Yea i ended up getting the original SVS PC for 350 local. Its working great.Terps Swimming!

I'm considering the bic h100 subwoofer as well. Anyone here knows how it compares to the JBL venue sub12? They are both in the $240 or so price range.
