When did Threshold start mid 70's?other than them I have no idea who was doing this back then.I know several of the big JA PAN companies introduced units in about 1980 ish.

Sorry, stream of consciousness for me. I was refering to late 70's and was thinking more of Nelson Pass and his design exploits rather than Threshold specifically. Again just drawing a general conclusion based on what I've read over the years. They may have not been exactly like the Bendini topology but perhaps a derivative. That's as far as my specific knowledge reaches. :). even then it's a bit shaky :p

Back then when I was starting out in this hobby I made the mistake of buying one of these bad boys a Technics SU V6.I was seduced by the sexy looking aluminum face plate and by the cleverly worded spec sheet that said it was a state of the art amplifier. To this day I rank it as the worst sounding integrated amp I have ever heard but it was also the best looking component I have ever owned.I sold it and bought a little NAD 3020.Sure it was fugly but boy did it sound good.

Funny thing is there are loads of people over on Audiokarma that sware by that Technics model. I never cared for any of Technics offerings. That whole New Class A marketing was pure BS. Same with Yamaha's auto class A, never cared for the sound of those either. All trick circuits that made things much more complicated than a simple design.

Agreed but I found out after the fact.:o

Yep that is why the NAD stuff sounded good, simple solid engineering much like uncle Nelson is doing now with his creations.

I got in the spare parts for the new amp today, figured I would share them here. the pics are of the old original transformer and caps.

The old caps were 16000uf each the new ones are 36000uf each a big step up. the old transformer is 1500watts not sure what the new torodial ones are rated at.

Great disscussion btw earlier I think I actually learned something from it which for me is well......:p not an easy thing lol.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

No they were all ready installed when I got the amp along with the new 36000uf caps. I cant imagine the 2 new toroids total are much higher rated than the older single transformer was. It only has a 15 amp slow blow fuse on the back, and I dont think it could suck much more than 1500watts before it blows this fuse can it?

And new teflon wiring on the inputs not even sure what the hell that is to be honest.. some bigger wiring throughout and he also upgraded some of the smaller caps etc on the boards. the ones you see in the pics along with the old transformer he sent me in a seperate box. I asked for them so if i ever do decide at some point to sell this amp I can offer it to the new buyer as an option to have all original parts if he wants. Here is a pic of the old smaller replaced ones and also a pic of how the amp looked before and after the upgrades.
