As much as I respect your opinions, I feel I need to reach deeper than 20hz. It was the way I was justifying my DIY sub over the HSU I sold.

Maybe I'll try out the 22.5" port. Should maintain a little more balance than the 30". I'd really like to drop one port in and be done w/ it, vs experimenting. My neighbors wouldn't appreciate me firing up my sub for a whole weekend trying to find the best tune. :P

    Just my opinion but.......

When tuning too low, your max output is low. Lets say you tune to 15hz. Max output at 15hz is 95dbs. Output at 20hz is 93hz. The higher up you go in hz, the less output you have. But lets say you tune to 20hz. At 20 hz output is 105dbs, you still get 95dbs at 15hz, but a better musical and explosion responce in the 20-60hz range. Rather than a huge hump at 14-18hz.

So by tuning to 20hz your not loosing anything at 15hz, but gaining at the musical and movie level.

I tryed it. I found also tuning too low nulls increase around the room. Overexcursion and damage to the driver, was easily acheived.

I believed that I wanted really deep bass, but when all was said and done, I could not hear it or feel it. I had to actually raise the tuning to achieve deep bass. I know, I couldnt believe it either.

Just my .02 cents in, good luck with whatever you decide.

    Understood.

I'll see if it's possible to experiment with the different ports in the warehouse... just for kicks. Maybe I'll go for 15" after all. Thanks for the help you guys. I'll update with pics soon (hopefully!)

Even if you tune to 15hz you get the same ouput at 15hz as you would if it were tuned to 20hz with that particular driver. You end up losing 3db across the board at the 15 hz tune, and lose a lot of power handeling. Trust me all the 15hz tune is going to do is let you say it is tuned to 15 hz.

Got it. I'm sure all of that would make more sense with access to software as well.
Maybe I can get my hands on a copy of Parallel and boot WinISD up on there. :)

    So how is it going?
I think you can buy a flange to mount the port with, and pull the tube for easy tune changes. Don't feel you are locked into One design. I really think you will be safe with the 60" tube. I wish I never shrank mine.

    Hey all,
Made some good progress tonight. My buddy bought a router this afternoon, so we were able to finish cutting all the caps. We also made the cuts for the port side, including a countersink for the Thriller Audio flare to be flush with the endcap. Ports are now ready to drop in, and measure about 16.5" long including the port. (Can always chop it down a little if necessary.)

I'll try to get some photos up next week. We'll be ordering the drivers on Friday, which should inspire us to get moving. My Behringer has been on my shelf for weeks now... I can't wait to get it connected!

I truly have been having dreams at night of being absolutely astonished by my DIY sub. I'm sure it's not too far off from the truth! :)

Here's the latest--sorry for another crappy camera phone pic.

Driver is being ordered on Monday. Everything is pretty much cut, and I have carpet ready once it's all done. Basically waiting on the driver to arrive! So excited..

And the most recent progress. Port is attached, endcaps are painted, and carpet is adhered. I've also installed the speaker terminals. Final assembly should be a matter of 1-2 hrs once the driver arrives!

Way to go! I am nearly as anxious as you! What length did you finally go with on the port?

The tube itself is 15". Then there's another 2.5" or so w/ the port, so an effective 20" port I suppose?

More work tonight: Was disappointed with the inconsistency of the edges. So absorbant that I didn't get an even distribution of paint. In cleaning up the shop, my brother found some material that we decided was PERFECT for wrapping the endcaps. So here's a shot of it:

So I showed my wife that pic the other night. She had no reaction. So I guess it could have gone worse... she could have said "ABSOLUTELY NOT". I believe the conversation went a little like:
    (me): Look! Isn't it beautiful?
    (her): It's big.
(me): Big and Beautiful. Just like you like them...
    (her): Sure.

For a pregnant college student, she's coping pretty well. ;)

Good to hear. It is something to buy something nice, but when it comes to a sub that will out perform most anything out there, and you built it! I am sure with the specs you shared with us it will sound great. Be carefull not to scare the unborn child!

    Enjoy

    Hey guys,
Still here sorta. Just been extremely busy with my two jobs and a pregnant wife at home. Lots of family events through the Holidays as well...

I still haven't used the sub a whole lot to be honest, except for the night I got it hooked up. I just swapped out receivers today, and have tomorrow off, so I'm hoping I can give it another hardcore run tomorrow evening.

Where can I get subwoofer demo discs?

id recommend using a spl meter and bringing a laptop out there with a sine sweep program. www.download.com has one i believe i think its called test tone generator. figure out how low it can go within +/- 3db.

other than that use some good action movies with some bass. war of the worlds, LOTR trilogy, etc...
